  2. Choosing a subject and course to study can seem a daunting task. Deciding upon a course which will suit you requires plenty of research. Below are some points to consider before making that all-important decision. • The best way to decide what you would like to study is to ask yourself the following questions. • Which subjects interest me? • What are my talents? • What job would I like to do after attending university? • Which academic skills would I like to improve?

Extremely important to find the right UK undergraduate course and institution for the student. • Things to think about when choosing a UK undergraduate course to suit your needs: What type of degree is it? • What are the entry requirements, specifically IB or non-IB, High School Diploma, SAT Scores? • What are the options with the subject? • Does it follow your chosen career path? • Is it a recognized qualification in your home country?

UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service) Website – Is the best place to begin the research process • Take the Stamford Test on UCAS Website for free • University Prospectuses • Open Days – UK version of college visit day • Taster Courses – A number of schools allow students to “taste” a course giving student chance to experience university environment • Higher Education League Tables found in British papers like The Guardian and Times • British Council Website -- http://www.britishcouncil.org/new/ • http://www.unistats.com

  5. What is ? • The central application service to Universities in the UK. • UCAS does not make any decisions on the allocation of places. • UCAS Application deadline January 15th

The 10 Step Process • Potential applicant conducts research • Registers online with UCAS Apply • Completes form and processes payment • Academic reference added by WAB • WAB sends form electronically to UCAS • UCAS processes form and forwards to chosen universities • Universities submit decisions (offer or unsuccessful) • Applicant views decisions on Track • Applicant replies to offers on Track (Firm / Insurance) • Universities confirm places when results are released

Personal Statement The purpose of the personal statement is to tell the universities and colleges why you are applying for the course(s) you have chosen and why they should want you as a student. This statement helps universities and colleges to know more about you as a person. We will work closely with students on the personal statement.

  10. Personal Statement Plagiarism is taken seriously by all universities and if you are suspected of copying your personal statement then you run the risk of not being accepted by any of the universities.

  11. References Students ask one of their teachers to write their UCAS Reference. IB Predicted grades will also be entered at this stage for the examinations that will be taken in May 2012 • The reference will comment on the following • Suitability for the course chosen. • Proposed career plan - if they have one and suitability for this career. • Academic Performance. • Involvement in school community as it relates to proposed course of study.

  12. Types of Offers • Conditional offer • The university or college will offer you a place if you meet certain conditions, which are usually based on your exams. • Unconditional offer • You have met all the academic requirements and the university or college is happy to accept you.

  13. WAB Destinations • Scandinavia • Germany • Netherlands • Switzerland • France • Spain • Scotland • American-style universities in Europe (private)

  14. General Information • Full IB Diploma is most recognized • Specific countries have very exact IB course requirements • May have to sit university or language exams • Application process timeline: • Deadlines in spring/summer of grade 12 • IB results available in July after WAB graduation
