  2. 1. How did immigration affect industry? • Immigration affect industry by bringing more skilled and unskilled workers to the U.S.

  3. 2. What factors helped U.S. industries grow? • plentiful natural resources • growing population • improved transportation • high immigration • new inventions • investment capital • government assistance

  4. 3. What is a patent? • A patent is a government document giving an inventor the exclusive right to make or sell his or her invention for a specific number of years.

  5. 4. What is a business cycle? • A business cycle is pattern of good times and bad times in the economy

  6. 5. Why does the economy grow during a boom? • The economy grows during a boom because people buy more and some people invest in business.

  7. 6. When did the United States experience depressions? • The United States experienced depressions in 1837, 1857, 1873 and 1893.

  8. 7. How did the development of the Bessemer steel process change the steel industry? • The Bessemer steel process changed the steel industry because it was now cheaper to make steel. They could now sell it at a cheaper price so more industries could buy it.

  9. 8. What was the main use of steel in the late 1800s? • The main use of steel in the late 1800s was for rails for expanding railroads.

  10. 9. Who is Thomas Edison? (Who is he and what did he do?) • Thomas Edison was an inventor who held over 1000 patents. He was responsible for improving the light bulb.

  12. 11. How did Edison change the way of life in America? • Edison changed the way of life in America by making it practical to use the electric light. He was also responsible for many other inventions that made life easier for Americans.

  13. 12. Who is Alexander Graham Bell? (Who is he and what did he do?) • Alexander Graham Bell was a teacher of the deaf who discovered how to transmit the human voice using electricity. This lead the invention of the telephone.

  14. 13. Why was the telephone “the greatest marvel ever achieved in electrical science? • The telephone was “the greatest marvel ever achieved in electrical science” because people thought it would improve communication.
