  2. Waste management in Latvia -I • Latvia: • area - 64,589 km2; • population - 2,366 thousand people. • Administration • The territory of Latvia is divided into 26 districts and 7 cities of state importance. • There are 70 towns and around 470 rural municipalities in the districts.

Waste management in Latvia -II • Solid waste generation - about 1,342,000 t/year, including: • municipal waste: about 650,000 ton/year • demolition waste: about 125,000 ton/year • non-hazardous industrial waste: about 475,000 ton/year, including 260,000 t wooden waste • hazardous industrial waste: about 67,000 ton/year • health care waste: about 2,000 ton/year • Source : Geoconsultants.lv

Waste management in Latvia -III • Waste treatment: Reuse / recycling - 342,000 t/year or 25% • packaging waste - 150,000 t/year; • wooden waste - 140,00 ton/year, • demolition waste - 40,000 ton/year; • others - about 12,000 t/year.   7. Latvian association of waste management companies - LASUA • LASUA was established in April1996 • Members– 48 companies • Number of employees – more than3000 • Total turnover – 70 Mio € (2006) • Approximately 90% of the market share • Services offered by members - fully covered all country

  10. Functions of LASUA • 1. Representing interest of members in relations with governmental and municipal institution • 2. Developing of the policy of the waste management • 3. Aggregate and distribute information on waste management and experience related thereto. • 4.Issuing professional qualification certificates • 5. Arrange and conduct training and seminars on waste management • 6. Cooperate with waste management companies of other countries as well as to join international organizations.
