Housing Segregation 1960’s A Raisin in the Sun • Blacks were forced to live in poor neighborhoods • Whites lived in rich neighborhoods with nicer homes • Youngers lived in a poor apartment • Apartment was small and cheap • Slept on couches • Washed their own clothes • Worked hard for small amounts of money • Wanted to live in a better community

  3. Employment Opportunities for Minorities 1960’s A Raisin in the Sun • Blacks: blue- collared jobs • Didn’t receive good pay • Women: Household jobs • Cooking • Cleaning • Washing • Walter: Chauffer • Mama: House work; took care of family • Ruth: Housing chores

  4. My Culture/ Background • Italian • Pasta dinner always on Sundays • Love Italian foods • Different now, then before because people don’t judge off of my culture

  5. Personal Goals/ Dreams • College: Become successful • Play college softball:starting short-stop: Continue what I love to do • Raise a great family • Like Mama • “Sometimes you feel like you’re not good enough and feel like giving up on you’re dreams.” • Relates to Bennie’s feelings

  6. Conclusion • People need to always have goals to become successful • Don’t let other people stop you for fighting for what is right • Don’t be afraid to show who you really are • Black • Different cultural background
