  2. The H.L. Hunley Description • looked like a huge grey log • was 40’ long, 4 ½’ tall and 4’ wide • made of iron • many weights and gauges • one hatch for crew to climb in • Horace Hunley funded the design of the Hunley The H.L. Hunley Underwater

  3. The H.L. Hunley Crew • First crew August 29 did not know how to handle submarine sank • Second crew October 15 Horace Hunley was captain with seven other men left something open and immediately sank • Final crew February 17 George Dixon was captain managed to put Housatonic on fire sank The H.L. Hunley’s third and final crew.

  4. The H.L. Hunley vs the U.S.S. Housatonic • Hunley pushed mine against Housatonic • Housatonic burned for three minutes • Sank within five minutes • Hunley also sank U.S.S. Housatonic

  5. Why was the Hunley significant to the Confederacy? • It sank a Union ship • Broke Union blockade • Traveled underwater it would not be seen • Lead to more submarines being used Confederate Flag
