Hebrews 6:1-3 “Let us go on to perfection” • Hebrews 6:4-6 “Sons of Perdition” All sins shall be forgiven, except the sin of the Holy Ghost; for Jesus will save all except the sons of perdition. What must a man do to commit the unpardonable sin? He must receive the Holy Ghost, have the heavens opened unto him, and know God, and then sin against Him. After a man has sinned against the Holy Ghost, there is no repentance for him. He has got to say that the sun does not shine while he sees it; he has got to deny Jesus Christ when the heavens have been opened unto him, and to deny the plan of salvation with his eyes open to the truth of it; and from that time he begins to be an enemy to this work, he hunts me, he seeks to kill me, and never ceases to thirst for my blood. He gets the spirit of the devil, the same spirit that they had who crucified the Lord of Life, the same spirit that sins against the Holy Ghost. You cannot save such persons; you cannot bring them to repentance; they make open war, like the devil, and awful is the consequence (Teachings, 358).
D&C 76:31 5 Things a person must do in order to become a Son of Perdition: • Know His power • Be made partakers of His power • Power of the devil overcomes them • Deny the truth • Defy God’s power
True or False… • __ Melchizedek was a prophet who lived after Abraham and Moses. • __ The Melchizedek Priesthood was first made known to Adam, and the patriarchs and prophets in every dispensation have had this authority. • __ The Melchizedek Priesthood use to have a different name. • __ Melchizedek was the king of Salem.
__ Most of the information we have about Melchizedek can be found in the Bible. • __ All those who receive the Melchizedek Priesthood and keep their sacred covenants will hold this priesthood forever and become like the Son of God. • __ It is possible for men to achieve exaltation in the Celestial Kingdom without holding the Melchizedek Priesthood.
Why is it called the Melchizedek Priesthood? D&C 107:3-4, Alma 13:14-18 J.S.T. Genesis 14:25-40 • Hebrews 7:3 “Without Father, Without Mother, Without Descent.”
The right to the higher priesthood was not inherited in the same way as was the case with the Levites and sons of Aaron. Righteousness was an absolute requisite for the conferral of the higher priesthood (Mormon Doctrine, 478). • Hebrews 7:11-12 Change of the priesthood to administer gospel ordinances to enter the presence of our Lord!
Joseph Smith taught that an individual cannot become a Son of Perdition in the post mortal spirit world (Teachings, 357). • The sins unto death may be thought of as somewhat difficult to define and limit with precision. From the words of Joseph Smith quoted above we note that “…many apostates of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints” will fall into this category. We cannot definitely identify them individually since it is impossible for us to know the extent of their knowledge, the depth of their enlightenment, and the sureness of their testimonies before their fall…
…The sin against the Holy Ghost requires such knowledge that it is manifestly impossible for the rank and file to commit such a sin. Comparatively few Church members will commit murder wherein they shed innocent blood, and we hope only a few will deny the Holy Ghost (Kimball, Miracle of Forgiveness, 122-23).
Hebrews 6:15 “After patiently enduring, he obtained the promise!” • Hebrews 6:19-20 “The forerunner is for us entered” “As the High Priest in Israel passes through the veil into the holy of holies on the day of atonement, as part of the cleansing rites which freed Israel from sin (Lev. 16), so Jesus has entered into heaven to prepare the way for those who through obedience to his laws become clean and pure” (McConkie, DNTC, 3:165). • Hebrews 7:1-4 “The Melchizedek Priesthood”
