  4. Classroom Presentations • Counselor met with all 3rd graders • 75 total students • “I” Statement Lesson

  5. 62% of 3rd graders knew “I” statements are “one” way to solve a problem with another person. 84% of 3rd graders know “I” statements are “one” way to solve a problem with another person. Pre Results Post

  7. Positive Outcome (Demonstration)Not just saying…..doing. 3rd grade students demonstrated “I” message skills in: • Conflicts involving friends • Peers using negative criticism

  8. 20% of 3rd graders reported they could use and I statement to solve a problem with another person. 100% of students demonstrated the knowledge and proper use of and “I statement given a variety of conflicts they may face. 77% stated they felt comfortable enough to use one. Pre Results Post

  11. Implications • 3rd graders can learn to speak up for themselves in a non-violent, productive way. • Students are solving some problems for themselves. Therefore, teacher have more time to teach.

  12. What we learned • Students will attempt use of the “I” message once taught • Students need to understand that this is not the only method of conflict management • Small groups for extended practice using “I” Statements may be helpful for students still receiving DRs (Discipline Referrals)

  13. School Counselors contribute in a meaningful way to academic achievement of all students.
