  1. KAGRA Cryogenics T.Suzuki Program Advisory Boad 2014.04.23

  2. Recommendation:1. We recommend that, to the extent possible, the cryogenic payload be given extra attention and manpower. Other research groups (notably the University of Glasgow) have significant experience with similar issues, and it may be possible to seek added help from them. Collaboration with other research groups University of Glasgow Investigation is in progress for application of hydroxi-catalysis bonding of sapphire. Strength tests were performed in cryogenic temperature. University of Jena Q measurement is in preparation for hydroxi-catalysis bonding and indium bonding. Visiting researchers helped to measure thermal conductivity and Q of Sapphire rod. Status of Manpower in cryogenics group T. Tomaru (KEK) joined in Jan. 2014. C. Tokoku (ICRR) left in Apr. 2014

  3. Recommendation:2. Because of the importance of this subsystem and because of new technologies which have to be developed, there is some risk that not all project requirements will be satisfied. We recommend that KAGRA consider what fallback options might exist (e.g. reverting to room temperature input test masses, or using CLIO-like cryogenic suspension), and what performance might be achieved if problems were encountered. Development of cryogenic mirror suspension is in progress under cooperation with subgroups of Cryogenics, Vibration Isolation, Mirror andAuxiliary Optics. Development of sapphire monolithic suspension which consists of mirror, suspension rod and blade spring is going. An assembling of the monolithic suspension is based on sapphire-sapphire bonding technique. An evaluation of thermal noise for sapphire monolithic suspension system is integrated by FEM calculation from results of elementary measurement of components. We consider the second best plan of mirror suspension. • Simpler and faster to realize than sapphire monolithic suspension • Guarantee an operation of overall suspension system • Replace with a sapphire monolithic suspension For example, use of a cradle structure, metal blade and suspension rod and a separated heat links.
