In 1945 Scotland imported 2000 two-storeyed wooden houses direct from Sweden to help solve the problem.

In addition a child’s educational path was determined by them passing the ‘11 plus’ exam. This led to dual system of secondary education, often considered to be socially divisive with children forced down a vocational path rather than academic one.

Jobs were created in industry as well as schemes such as road building and construction. By 1946 Labour had brought the unemployment figure down to 2.5%. This led Dalton (Chancellor of the Exchequer) to claim “full employment was the greatest revolution brought about by Labour”.

Health Act, 1948 • However, the Act was delayed for 2 years. • This was due to opposition to the bill from doctors with 64% against its introduction. This was largely because many felt the State was taking too active a part in Doctor’s work and also due to the loss of fee paying patients. Aneurin Bevan, Health Minister decided to get doctors support by compensating them, including paying 75p per NHS patient in their practice.
