  5. Political socialization • – The process by which people gain their political attitudes and opinions.

  6. Straight-ticket voting • – The practice of voting for candidates of only one party in an election.

  7. Poll tax • – A special tax demanded as a condition for voting.

  8. Transient • – persons living in the State for only a short time

  9. Independents • – A term used to describe people who have no party affiliation.

  10. Registration • – procedure of voter identification intended to prevent fraudulent voting.

  11. Injunction • – a court order that forces limits on the performance of some act by a private individual or by public official

  12. Gerrymandering • – The drawing of electoral district lines to limit the strength of a particular group.

  13. Electorate • – the potential voting population

  14. Preclearance • – the prior approval by the justice department of changes to or new election laws by certain states.

  15. Political efficacy • – Ones own influence of on politics.

  16. Split-ticket voting • – Voting for candidates of different parties for different offices at the same election.

  17. Purge • – the removal of names of those who are no longer eligible to vote from the lists of registered voters.

  19. Off-year election • – congressional election that occurs between presidential election years.
