  1. Street Child Drama As part of their Literacy and History studies, Year 5 have been reading the story of ‘Street Child’, by Berlie Doherty. They have explored the text by preparing freeze-frames of different scenes. In this photo-sequence, they re-tell the event when Mr Spinks, the landlord, comes to evict Jim, his sisters and his sick mother from their poor home. Sadly, the dreaded workhouse seems their only refuge. The children worked hard, using imagination and creativity, as well as knowledge of the text, to employ body language and facial expressions to convey the feelings of the characters. What do you think of their efforts?

  2. Mr Spinks, the uncaring owner of the dilapidated house where Jim lives with his family, has come to collect his rent.

  3. Ignoring their distress, he disturbs their ailing mother by demanding the rent, accusing her of laziness.

  4. Innocently, Jim tells Mr Spinks that, last night, they had spent their last shilling on an appetising pie.

  5. However, the greedy rent-collector is outraged that they have spent rent money on a pie. Before storming out, he orders them to leave.

  6. The children, shocked and distressed, gather their belongings and help their frail mother to prepare to abandon their meagre home.

  7. Stunned, frightened and aghast at what has happened, the little family leave home. However will they survive?
