  5. Data Management Chinese National Arctic and Antarctic Data Centre (hereinafter called CN-NADC) was established to provide a national facility to manage and disseminate scientific data resulting from Chinese Antarctic &Arctic scientific research program in response to IPY Data Policy and Article III.1.c of the Antarctic Treaty. Besides, there are two rules of polar science data policy had implemented by CN-NADC in 2003. ● Management Policy of Polar Science Data of China(Draft) ● Management Policy of Polar Science Data of China Implementing Rules Data collecting Data processing Data quality emendation Data preservation and archive Data use and reproduction Data sharing Data publishing

  6. Chinese National Arctic and Antarctic Data Center (CN-NADC) Chinese National Arctic and Antarctic Data Center (CN-NADC) , also as polar district of data sharing infrastructure of earth system science, is an authoritative data publishing center of polar data and specimens. From the first Chinese Antarctic expedition in 1984, CN-NADC has collected a series of observation datasets in disciplines such as oceanography, atmosphere science, biology, geophysics and glaciology. It also has built platforms providing data release, query and download for scientific researchers.

  7. Data Portal – Data-Sharing platform of Polar Science(PolarDB) PolarDB is an authoritative platform for managing and sharing data of Chinese polar science. It covers data from a broad spectrum of disciplines, including polar oceanography, polar solar-terrestrial physics, polar glaciology, polar resources and environmental science, polar biology and ecology, polar geography and geodesy, polar geology and geophysics and polar atmospheric science, etc. It has become a characteristic sub-center of “China’s Data-sharing Network of Earth System Science”. Till now 441 pieces of metadata have been published which is about 7,280Mbit. www.chinare.org.cn 190 pieces of metadata have been submitted to GCMD

  8. Data Portal – Resource – sharing Platform of Polar Samples (BIRDS) http://birds.chinare.org.cn BIRDS provides assembled and digitized information to share and display rare Arctic and Antarctic specimens obtained by CHINARE in the past 20 years. It includes a Biological Specimen Repository, an Ice and Snow Repository, a Rocks and Minerals Repository, an Antarctic Meteorite Repository, a Sediment Sample Repository and a BIRDS website.

  9. Data Portal -- BIRDS The biology depositories of the Platform include the depository of the Institute of Oceanology Chinese Academy of Sciences and the depository of PRIC. These two depositories preserve more than 5,000 pieces of marine and terrestrial biological samples obtained during previous polar expeditions since 1984. Up to now more than 2,061 pieces of the polar marine plant and animal samples information have been published via BIRDS website by the two depositories for scientists and researchers.

  10. Data Portal -- BIRDS Polar ice-snow, the important information carrier of the global climate and environmental changes, plays an important role in the research on the global changes. Up to now all our previous CHINARE had successfully conducted expeditions on glacier and gotten a lot of snow-ice samples in the King George Island of the West Antarctic, the Amery Ice Shelf of the East Antarctic, the Dalk Glacier, the Zhongshan Station-Dome A inland traverse, Dome A area, and the Yellow River Station of the Arctic.

  11. Data Portal -- BIRDS Up to now more than 1,361 pieces of the polar rock samples information have been published via BIRDS website with detailed descriptions in words on the origin, location, mineral constituents, structure and formation with photos in appearance and microscope. In the future the rest of the samples as well as those newly collected will be available for the scientists and the researchers to use.

  12. Data Portal -- BIRDS At present our country owns 9,834 pieces of the Antarctic meteorites, mainly stony meteorite, stony meteoric iron, and meteoric iron, among which are two Mars meteorites, one Kitchen God Star meteorite, and other rare and unique meteorites. Up to now more than 2,401 pieces of the meteorites information have been published via BIRDS website.

  13. Data Portal -- BIRDS The polar sediments contain the relevant information on the global and regional environmental changes and, through lab analysis, the relevant information on the environmental changes recorded in the sediment can be interpreted. By testing the years of sediment structure, the time sequence of the polar environmental changes can be set up. Up to now more than 156 pieces of the sediment samples information have been published via BIRDS website.

  14. Data Portal -- BIRDS

  15. Data Portal – Gate to Polar • So many databases are not convenient for scientists especially with different accounts. Then ‘Gate to Polar’ portal has been proposed and designed to display and access data on one site through centralized users and permissions. • Advantages: • CN-NADC can publish portlets as remote Web services and integrate remote portlets into this portal. Having such a comprehensive, manageable work environment can enhance data sharing work. • single sign on and download data on one platform. • Centralized display of all polar data and information system.

  16. Data Portal – Gate to Polar Make polar data available! Data policy / data standards / data management Geomagnetism Database Zhongshan Digisonde Database Aurora Database PANDA Meterorological Database Sea-Ice-Atmosphere Database PANDA Oceanographic Database Marine Ecology Database PolarDB / BIRDS PolarDB: Data-sharing platform of Polar Science, provides metadata and datasets services. BIRDS: Resource-sharing Platform of Polar Samples, provides sample and specimen services.
