  3. Plot (definition) • Plot is the organized pattern or sequence of events that make up a story. Every plot is made up of a series of incidents that are related to one another.

  4. 1. Exposition • This usually occurs at the beginning of a short story. Here the characters are introduced. We also learn about the setting of the story. Most importantly, we are introduced to the main conflict (main problem).

  5. 2. Rising Action • This part of the story begins to develop the conflict(s) and adds complications to the plot’s problem(s). A building of interest or suspense occurs.

  6. 3. Climax • This is the turning point of the story. Usually the main character comes face to face with a conflict. The main character will change in some way. This is the point of greatest emotional intensity or suspense.

  7. 4. Falling Action • All loose ends of the plot are tied up. The conflict(s) and climax are taken care of.

  8. 5. Resolution • The story comes to a reasonable ending. Reveals or suggest outcome of conflict

  10. SETTING • Setting is a term referring to the time and location in which a story takes place. The term is relevant for various forms of literary expression, such as short stories, novels, dramas, and screenplays.

  11. CONFLICT • THE STRUGGLE BETWEEN 2 OPPOSING FORCES • Internal Conflict- exists within the mind of a character who is torn between two opposing forces within himself (conscience) • External Conflict- Occurs when a character struggles with a force outside of himself (society)

  12. THEME • Is a broad idea in a story, or a message or lesson conveyed by a work. This message is usually about life, society or human nature. • Most themes are implied rather than explicitly stated. Themes arise from the interplay of plot, setting, character, conflict, and tone.
