The Effect of Different Fat Contents in Milk on Bacterial Growth Nathania Elisa BIO 130
Introduction • Factors influencing bacterial growth. • Milk is vulnerable to bacterial contamination, bacteria feed up on lactose. • Lactose and fat are made up of same components. • Question: Will different fat contents in milk have a significant effect on bacterial growth rate?
Discussion • Chi-square calculation for all samples, (degree of freedom = 3), no significant difference. • Chi-square calculation for two extreme samples (Non-fat milk and whole milk), with degree of freedom=1, there is significant difference. • The presence of fat enhances bacterial growth. • Bacterial growth is directly proportional to fat content in milk.
