  2. Featured Kiwanians Rose Distribution Projects/Upcoming Events Education Spot Last Week Notable Kiwanians that showed up early to work on the Rose Project were John Bates, Charlie and Wanda Bender, Max Booke, Corky Borders, Ed Buickerood, Leigh Roberts, Butch Shadwell, and Carol Wallace.  A special thanks to all. What’s Going On? Past Presidents Day is coming to our club on June 2nd. If you know a past president who might not know about this annual event, please invite him. Kiwanis International’s continuing service focus is called “Young Children: Priority One” The Priority One Advisory Council is a group of more than thirty child-related organizations that advise Kiwanis on the “Young Children ”Priority One” program and offer local partners to clubs for collaborative projects. Every Kiwanis club is urged to conduct at least one major “Young Children” Priority One” project each year. Don LaFond Neil Powell Division Council Meeting The meeting is scheduled for May 24 at Selva Marina. More later from Bill Montgomery. Last week the speaker didn’t make it, but we had not one, but two featured Kiwanians instead. First up was Don Lafond. He explained that his life is a series of three phases so far, Pre-Navy, Navy, and then post Navy. One might think that serving in the US Navy was a pivotal part of Don’s life. Don hopes to have a third career as a professor one day and then finally to start the fourth phase of his life, actual retirement. Good job Don! Next we were blessed with Neil Powell’s life story. For such a young fellow he has been very busy so far. The most interesting part was how much of Neil’s life has been spent at the beach. I was sorry to hear that he started out to be an engineer, and then changed course. Too bad, based on his tireless work for Kiwanis, I think he would have done well in that field too. --Butch Shadwell Let our children grow tall, And some taller than others if they have it in them to do so. --Margaret Thatcher Did You Know…. The first kind of PENCIL was a bunch of GRAPHITE sticks held together by string. Then someone decided it would be better to push the graphite into the inside of a hollow wooden stick. Joseph Rechendorfer was the first person to think of putting a piece of rubber onto the top of a pencil which makes it really easy to rub out mistakes. Did you know that the average lead pencil can draw a line that is almost 35 miles long or that you can write almost 50,000 words in English with just one pencil? Amazing fact! Now imagine an eraser that could match it !!! God Bless America Congratulations! Guests This Week Happy Birthday! Ed Buickerood5/15 James Lane 5/17 Date Joined: Don Stanton 5/12/1949 Bill Hutchinson 5/13/1988 Jon Daugherty 5/15/2003 Pat Leewas a guest brought by Bill Thompson.
