  1. Welcome!

  2. Aims of class 4 With the support of everyone involved - • For children to leave North Nibley as happy and confident individuals, who are ready for the challenges that secondary school brings. • Children who are confident of their abilities, but who also understand areas of weakness and have strategies for helping themselves.

  3. Thank you for what you do… • Help with trips, Monday cooking, transport • Help your child with homework or writing notes to let me know how they got on • Hearing your child read • Helping with times tables and spellings • Bringing in items that link to our topic or other things we are doing in school

  4. Reading • Needs to happen daily • Thanks to FONNS we have new reading books for the whole school. Most children will have already been given a book from the scheme. • Book activities – these will be rewarded by certificates. • It is still good to listen to your child read and to read to them • Audio books etc are a good addition but shouldn’t be used instead  better if your child is able to follow the text whilst listening • Most importantly, quiz your child! Ask them questions about what they have read, ask them to predict what could happen next, summarise the last few pages to you, check that they know the meaning of words and see if they can provide synonyms or antonyms, ask them about characters etc. • Reading comprehension cards available

  5. Set on a Monday tested Friday • A different spelling rule is practised each week, this is detailed on the homework sheet. The list of words are only some of the key words that follow the pattern, but it is important to practise other words that follow the given pattern. • They also need to be practising the year 5/6 statutory spellings as these will also appear in the dictation passage • The spelling test takes the form of a dictation. Sentences will be read out that contain words that follow the pattern. • When marking  look at focus words, punctuation, all other spellings.

  6. Times tables • Tests on a Friday • The tests contain 96 questions that are a mixture of multiplication and division. They are given 10 minutes to complete this. • When scoring 96/96, they lose a minute from their time each week until they can complete it within 4 minutes. • The aim is to increase speed of recall, as this will help them in other areas of maths.

  7. Maths passport • Links on school website • Parent Guides available • Reinforce previously learnt skills from other passports

  8. Homework • Set on a Monday due in on Friday • Should be completed to the standard we expect in school e.g. written neatly, using pen, on the sheet or in the homework book, stuck in neatly. • Three tasks will be set, each task taking 20 - 30 minutes • When complete and marked: • 1 monster point given if it has been handed in on time and completed to the expected standard • 2 monster points given if the child has pushed themselves further (presentation, effort, completing extra, etc)

  9. Non-negotiables • CAPITAL LETTERS • Punctuation for the end of a sentence • Paragraphs • Common homophones spelt correctly • Speech punctuation • Fronted adverbials and comma • Apostrophes – for contractions and possession • Tenses • Handwriting and Presentation

  10. Handwriting • By the end of Year 6 children must be able to join their writing in a legible style. • Please encourage your child to join their writing .

  11. Your child is responsible for: • Changing their own reading book • Bringing home letters and returning them during registration • Handing in their homework books • Looking after their water bottle and bringing it home at the end of the week • Looking after their pencil cases and other belongings • Book bags  should be a school book bag to go on their chair or in their drawer • All children should go straight to the playground in the morning and bring anything to the cloakroom or classroom once the bell has gone

  12. PE kits • Full PE kit in school on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays • All items should be named • Carrier bag  muddy or wet items! • Deodorant (roll on) • If brought home for washing, ensure it is in school for PE days

  13. Other regular activities • Monday cooking – Thank you to the parents that have offered to help – without you this activity would be impossible. • Children will get 5 (or 6) opportunities over the year to cook and then eat (and clean up afterwards) a two course meal. • ‘Test Tuesday’ – this is not a ‘test’ it is weekly practise of formal calculation methods.
