  1. Outcomes of WWII

  2. US Occupation of Japan • American General Douglas MacArthur, who had led the Pacific campaign, was assigned the task of rebuilding post-war Japan • Reforms made Japan less imperialistic and less aggressive • Japan lost overseas empire, stripped of army and navy • Leaders put on trial and punished • People were given a democratic constitution • Emperor was allowed to remain on the throne, but his powers were drastically reduced

  3. Global Impact of WWII • As many as seventy million people died, much of Europe and Asia was destroyed • Germany, Italy, and Japan were occupied and turned into democratic nations • All European nations were weakened by the war, in terms of both power and economics, brought about the end of imperialism in Asia and Africa • Spirit of nationalism had spread to the colonies, they soon broke free of colonial rule

  4. The United Nations • The League of Nations proved to be a failure, as it was unable to stop aggressors (Italy, Japan, and Germany) from invading other countries. When it did take action, it was slow and inefficient. • Winston Churchill and Franklin D. Roosevelt created the United Nations in 1945 in an effort to maintain peace while promoting cooperation. • Members agree to give up the use of force, except in self-defense • Also seeks to eliminate hunger and disease • The Security Council of the U.N. consists of the most powerful countries • Can apply economic sanctions or use military power to resolve disputes • The General Assembly includes all member nations, and can make recommendations to the Security Council

  5. The Cold War • Immediately following WWII relations between the Soviet Union and United States broke down • Stalin refused to allow free elections in Poland • The US wanted to contain communism • Communism spreads to other nations, including China, with the help of the Soviets • While there was never actual fighting between the US and Soviets, they competed for influence in regional conflicts such as the Korean and Vietnam Wars
