  2. THESIS STATEMENT: I know some people disagree with me, but I think that _________________________________.

  3. I know some people disagree with me, but I believe that _________________. IDEAS FOR TOPICS

  4. Now let’s work on the first paragraph in your body. 1. TOPIC SENTENCE: One reason I believe this is ____________________________________________. 2. SUPPORTING DETAILS (facts, statistics, logic, personal experiences, expert statements, opinion, etc.): • __________________________________________ • __________________________________________ 3. CONCLUSION (summarize, repeat, etc.): _____________________________________________ And now, do the same thing for the second paragraph in your body (and for the other paragraphs you have supporting your position – be sure to use your two best paragraphs first and last).

This may be the hard part because it will seem like you are arguing against yourself, but you need to give the best reasons you can think of that others may have for disagreeing with you. • TOPIC SENTENCE: Some people disagree with me because __________________________ 2. SECOND OR THIRD REASONS AND/OR EXPLANATORY DETAILS: Remember that you are just acknowledging their position, not trying to prove it. 3. CONCLUSION: This may simply be a statement like, “These sound like valid reasons, but I disagree.”

  6. And now it’s your turn to argue back. • TOPIC SENTENCE -- Something like, “While these sound like good reasons to disagree, I still believe that…” • REASONS YOU DISAGREE – Be specific, use supporting details. • CONCLUSION – Emphasize your main points.

  7. Finally, it’s time for the introduction ATTENTION GRABBER (Quote, question, story, shocking fact, etc. THESIS STATEMENT

  8. And the last thing: The Conclusion TOPIC SENTENCE -- This may be a restatement of the thesis statement Emphasize your best points. CONCLUSION – This final sentence should make your paper “seem” finished.

  9. Revising and Editing Go back and check your facts. Is there a better way to organize your paper? Have another person read it. Is there anything that is unclear to him/her? Have you included unnecessary and/or irrelevant details? Have you used effective transitions? Count the number of sentences in each paragraph. Are the paragraphs varied in length?

  10. 7. Circle the first word in each sentence in your longest paragraph. Have you repeated the same word? 8. In your longest paragraph, count the number of letters in your longest word. In your shortest word. Are the word lengths varied? 9. Take out phrases like, “I think that” and “I believe that.” Rewrite the sentences if necessary. 10. Check for red and green squiggly lines. Correct your spelling and grammar.
