  3. Why it is important • Your organization relies on you • Intellectual capital • Energy and passion • Revenue generation • Ensure continuity • You set a standard for loyalty • You help keep the position from being a “resume builder”

  4. Selecting the right organization • Align your passion with your volunteer efforts • Understand the group’s goals • Visit their website • Attend programs • Join a committee • Meet other board and committee members

  5. What does the job entail? • Champion the mission and values • Know the history of the organization • Share your expertise • Know what the organization expects • Attend meetings • Read minutes in advance • Understand financial statements

  6. Where should you spend time? • Participating on committees • Fund raising • Attending events • Networking in the community

  7. Accepting the role • Be realistic about the time commitment • Have a sense of responsibility • Provide continuity
