Hemiresurfacing: A Surgical Solution for Osteonecrosis in Young Patients

DESCRIPTION

Hemiresurfacing, a type of surface hemiarthroplasty fixed with cement, is indicated for patients with Stage III avascular necrosis (AVN) and minimal acetabular damage. A study involving 29 patients showed a significant improvement in Harris Hip Score, from 48.1 to 79.3, after a follow-up of 34 months. Despite some revision rates and pain relief outcomes, hemeresurfacing is considered a viable alternative for young patients experiencing bone necrosis with a preserved acetabulum. It allows for minimal bone resection and can delay the need for total hip arthroplasty (THA).
