  2. AWEP (Ahli Wind Energy Project ) is a pioneer project in Palestine that is funded by the EU . This project will directly benefit Al-Ahli Hospital from the Wind Energy . Al-Ahli Hospital is the largest Hospital in Palestine (27,500 m2 ), it started work on 1993 ,it is working with the capacity of 200 beds which will be 350 beds in the near future . More than (470) staff members are working in the hospital which deals with more than150,000 patients per year .

  3. The Idea History At 2001,the P.F.S./Al-Ahli Hospital board of trustees Approved the plan of implementing a number of projects toward strengthen the infrastructure of the Hospital for the purpose of running the Hospital in case of disasters for a long time as much as possible, especially that Palestine has unstable political situation.

  4. Those projects were: • To generate the Oxygen needs of the hospital locally. The oxygen was imported from Israel by cylinders. • To build large additional water storage. • To build diesel storage. • To install WT for electricity generation .

  5. The Oxygen generator was implemented and run in 2002 with the capacity of generating 350 liters of oxygen per minute.

  6. The water storage was finished on 2004 with the capacity of 2880 M3 / The old water storage was only with a capacity of 660 M3 .

  7. The diesel storage also implemented in the year 2005 with the capacity of 50,000 liters.

  8. On 2009 with the help of the EUwe started our project AWEP (Ahli Wind Energy Project) .

  26. AWEP Partners and Associates Partners: The Department of Technology and Sustainable Development (TSD) and center for clean technology and environmental technology (CSTM)  of the University of Twente has more than 25 years of experience in developing training courses on energy management and renewable energy for its own in-house courses and for third parties. Associates: • Palestinian Energy Authority • Hebron Electric Power Co - Hebron Municipality • Palestine Polytechnic University (PPU) ,Renewable Energy and Environment Research Unit (REERU).

  27. Risks We are expecting to face some problem which are already known for us since the beginning, and we have our plan to manage all of those problem, main problem is the System design : • Needs data • Data of wind speed and direction already collected and analyzed for one year • Hospital electricity load data already collected and analyzed . • Site data already prepared as topographic drawings.

  28. Needs an expert designer but there is no local experts in this fields The international expert is already visited the AWEP site. • Political and logistic problem in implementing large WT system. • Regarding transportation • Regarding Installation • Regarding permission of the height of the WT • The idea of alternative scenarios like having 3 small (250 KW) WT instead of large WT 750 KW is ignored after the expert visit.

  29. Results Up-to-date • Meteomate station installed and get the readings of 12 months . • Hospital electrical load analysis is ready. • Site identifications is ready. • System design and tender preparation to be finalized. • Re-granting was announced and proposals received. • AWEP staff recruited .

  30. Results • Joining set Master • Joining MEEM Master • Joining EMSI training for one Engineer done. • International expert CRES visit is already done. • EWEC conference done. • Green Energy workshop done. • Heat of Sun Energy workshopis already done

  31. Results • Website is ready and online. • Project documentation agreement done. • Office set-up done. • Project opening ceremony was held on 4th of May 2009.

  33. Hospital Power Load

  34. Solar Energy At Al-Ahli Hospital • We started using solar energy for water heating since 10 years ago. • We have a pattern of Solar heating panels as follows: • Total Panels Number =54. • Each panel has an area = 2.28 M2 • Total area = 123.12 M2

  35. The panels are located on the hospital roof on a total area of 250M2 . • The system used for heating 5M3 daily from 15 C° to 50 C° which is equal to a difference 35 C° • This is equal to a saving of Approximately 750 KW/daily during 12 hours . • This is also equal to a saving of 273,750 KW/year saving approximately $50,000/year.

  36. ASEPAhli Solar Energy Project • We are thinking of another project to generate electricity from solar PVs. • The idea is to cover most of the hospital roof with PV panels. • The hospital roof area is 5700M2 • So if we use %80 of the roof for the solar panels then the area available will be about 4560M2

  37. For 1KW we need an area about 10M2 • then we may get about 456KW

  38. Hybrid System • In this scenario we will have a hybrid system in which we will have our electricity from the WT and the PVs. • In case we need more than what is produced from booth systems then we will get the rest needed amount from utility. • Also in case of failure then we will get our needs from the diesel generators.
