Literacy & numeracy • Inter-Board Steering Groups for consistency of approaches • Six new Literacy/Numeracy Development Officers per Board • Every teacher a teacher of literacy/ numeracy (ditto CASS Officers) • Targets and bench-marking data • Reading Recovery • Summer literacy & numeracy schemes • Total of £10.3m on lit/num in 2002/03 Costello Group residential 19-20 June 2003
Pupil behaviour • A continuum of need and response, but behaviour generally good • 6 new Behaviour Support Officers per Board • Pupil referral units – for short-term work on behaviour management • Education otherwise than at school • Total of £5m on behaviour in 2002/03 Costello Group residential 19-20 June 2003
School Support Programme • Replaced the Raising School Standards Initiative • Inter-Board Steering Group • Baseline inspection • Additional professional support and • (modest) additional funding based on schools’ own plans for improvement Costello Group residential 19-20 June 2003
School Support Programme(contd) • Focuses on • Quality of teaching and learning • School leadership/management • School development planning & target-setting • (inc RSSI) 181 schools involved to date • 132 schools ‘graduated’ by end 2002 • 47 schools in 2002/03 Costello Group residential 19-20 June 2003
‘Group 1’ schools • 5 post-primaries operating in the most difficult circumstances • School-driven innovative approaches to improvement • Intensive support and funding • Total of £4.5m on School Support Programme in 2002/03 Costello Group residential 19-20 June 2003
Good Practice Initiative • Started in 1999/00 school year • Two categories: • Successful schools despite adverse circumstances (disadvantage) • Other schools (inc nursery & special) • Bid to develop existing good practice • Must be prepared to disseminate • Website on ‘NINE’ • Total of £8.4m over last 4 years Costello Group residential 19-20 June 2003
