  2. Background Information • Word breakdown • Hepato=liver and itis=inflammation • Virus that inflames the liver • RNA virus that has many routes or entering • Many types, but main ones are • A, B, C, and Non A and Non B • Non A and Non B are sisters of C

  3. Epidemiology • Prevalent throughout the world • More focused in under developed or overcrowded countries • China • Africa • One of the many reasons why people must be vaccinated ahead of time

  4. Routes of Infection • Hepatitis A • Eat or drink anything contaminated by stool of the infected or in contact with stool or blood of the infected • Hepatitis B • Blood transfusions, direct blood contact with infected, tattoo that was applied with unsterile materials, shared personal items • Hepatitis C (Including Non A and Non B) • Same as those of Hepatitis B, also includes those who have been on long term kidney dialysis

  5. Methods of Human Resistance • Being a viral infection, best thing to do is be vaccinated • Receive titers and checkups and make sure vaccination is up to date. • While this doesn’t completely eliminate the chance of infection, it surely helps prevent a lot of cases

  6. Clinical Symptoms • Hepatitis A • Dark urine, fatigue, loss of appetite, low-grade fever, pale or clay colored stool, jaundice(yellow skin) • Hepatitis B • Same as Hepatitis A, but could also include muscle and joint aches • Hepatitis C(along with Non A and Non B) • Same as A and B, but could also include swelling and pain in the abdomen

  7. Methods of Treatment • Plenty of bed rest, lots of fluids, and eat healthy foods • Antiviral Medications such as Ribavirin to combat the viral infetctions • No real specific treatment, body must combat it • Worst cases involve liver transplant of damaged or infected liver

What are some of the ways that each of the Hepatitis’ can infect a person? • Direct contact with body fluids, sharing of personal items, coming in contact with an infected person • 3. True or False. A person can never get over Hepatitis. • False, some immune systems can fight off the infection and allow the person to get back to normal
