What is a wardrobe stylist? • A wardrobe stylist is someone who selects the clothing that their clients will wear. Celebrities hire stylists to dress them for editorials, press conferences, public appearances, performances and award shows. Stylists often work closely with celebrities to help them get on the best dressed list since celebrities are always in constant scrutiny by the media.
Education • In order to become a stylist, there is no specific degree or type of education that is required. People who want to pursue the career of a wardrobe stylist can assist an established stylist on photo shoots or become a styling intern. In this career, it is more about who you know and how much you network. How successful you are in the industry is indicative by how bad you want it and how much you are willing to put yourself out there.
Salary • Freelance stylists base their rates on a per day or half day basis. The rates charged depend on the market they are in. In larger markets stylists can charge anywhere from $400-$800 a day. The top stylists in the industry such as Rachel Zoe, charge up to a whopping $6,000 per day.
Personal Qualities and abilities • Someone pursuing a career as a stylist should have excellent communication and networking skills. They should also be creative, resourceful, have a keen eye, and be able to work in stressful, fast-paced environments.
Availability and Location • Larger metropolitan cities such as New York and Los Angeles have the best opportunity for anyone pursuing a career as a fashion stylist. • The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates a growth of 11% from 2008-2018 for people working in the clothing and fashion industry.
