  1. JaneBown " The best pictures are uninvited, they're suddenly there in front of you ... easy to see but difficult to catch. Katie Smith Period 11

  2. Who is Jane Bown … ? Why did I pick Jane Bown … ? She is a British photographer. She was married to Martin Moss, a fashion retail executive, who died in November of 2007. During the years she has became many people's favorite photographer. She has took many photos of the most famous individuals of the second half of the twentieth century. Her methods are straight forward of how she does her work. I picked Jane Bown because I love taking pictures in black and white and also taking pictures of people, either when they aren’t expecting it, or when it is being posed. I also picked Jane because I thought her work she did was really good, by the way her lighting is all natural and no light, like lamps are being used.

  3. What do/did Jane take shots of ? Jane takes portraits of a variety of people. (politicians, royalty, film stars, directors, writers, comics, artists, dancers, athletes, etc.) She mainly took black and white portrait photos. After she graduated from Guilford School of Photography, she took a career in child photographer. Her shots lasted no more than 15 minutes, and there were no props involved in her photography.

  6. Where did Jane live & go to school at … ? Jane Bown was born in Eastnor Herefordshine in 1925. She spent the war in Liverpool working as a chart corrector. After leaving the service she had been offered a two-year grant to study a course of her choice and looking at her options she decided to learn photography at the Guilford School of Photography.

  7. Why did Jane choose photography … ? She was given a grant to college, but she had no idea what she wanted to take, she just looked at the list of studies to do in college, and she chose photography to see how it would work out for her. She was told to go out and take photographs her first day of class, she didn’t even know how to take them. Over the next couple of years, she found her distinctive style, which is black and white portraits.

  8. Some interesting facts about Jane … She has worked for The Observer in United Kingdom since 1949. She doesn’t use artificial light, she uses natural lighting, and her camera is at least 40 years old. In 1985, she was awarded the MBE and in 1995, the CBE for her outstanding contribution to photography.
