  3. Reporting Statements Dr. Martin Yung said that the patients who had tried to look for unlicensed doctors were doing something really dangerous. “The patients who try to look for unlicensed doctors to reduce their operation costs are doing something really dangerous,” said Dr. Martin Yung.

Reporting Statements The doctors said that the public was worried since most people who had undergone weight-loss surgeries werewomen in their child-bearing years. “The public is worried since most people who underwent weight-loss surgeries are women in their child-bearing years,” said the doctors.

  8. Reporting questions Some rules of reporting questions are similar to reporting statements. Work in pairs. Compare the statement and question below, and come up with 3 similar rules. Direct speech: “I am happy with my 3L students now.” Miss Chung said. “Am I happy with my 3L students now?” Miss Chung asked. Reported speech: Miss Chung said that she was happy with her 3L students then. Miss Chung asked if she was happy with her 3L students then.

Joyce asked Miss Chung who wanted to be ugly.  Do not change the _________ when we report questions with wh-words as the subject  Put the object after the reporting verb ‘______’, if any e.g. “Who has undergone plastic surgery, Angela?” Chrissie asked. word order asked A: Chrissie asked Angela who had undergone plastic surgery.

  13. 6 reminders on reporting questions Apart from the similarities when reporting statements, the following changes should be made when we report questions: • Put the subject before the ________ in questions • Do not change the word order when we report questions with ____________ as the subject 3. _____________ do, does and did 4. Use _____________ for yes/no-questions • Put the _______ after the reporting verb ‘asked’, if any • Change the question mark into ____________ verb wh-words Take away if or whether object full-stop
