  2. Web-Based Email Account • Simply visit a website using any computer, enter your login and password, and you will be able to read, compose and send messages. • Have to be connected to the Internet for the time when you are composing emails.

  3. Email Address • An address that someone has to type in the “To” field so that mail can be sent to you. • The part of your email address after the @ symbol is either a company’s or your ISP’s name.

  4. Username • Username is the part to the left of the @ sign. • It identifies the name of this unique user to whom the address belongs to.

  5. E-mail Password • The password is used for an email service that requires a login. • Never choose an easy-to-guess password. • Choose a difficult password, but not so difficult that you cannot remember it.

  6. Inbox • The folder for keeping delivered emails.

  7. Composing a Message • Send e-mail by: entering the recipient’s email address in the “To” field, type the message in the large text box and click the “Send” button. • The subject line helps distinguish between the different messages.

  8. Replying to a Message • To send an email back to the person who originally sent it, with a new message added.

  9. Forwarding a Message • To pass an email that you have received on to another person.

  10. Deleting a Message • Message that you do not want to keep in the inbox. • The message is moved to the deleted items folder, e.g. Trash.

  11. Trash Folder • When you delete a message in the “Inbox”, you are actually moving it to the “Trash” folder. • To permanently delete a message, you empty the “Trash” folder.

  12. Email Attachment • A computer file sent with an email. • Can be any kinds of files like pictures, text documents, music etc. • Most email programs use a paperclip icon to indicate that there is a file attached to a message.

  13. Email Address Book • Just as you use an address book to keep a list of names and phone numbers, you can keep a list of email addresses that you often use. • The address book button allow you make new entries into the address book.

  14. Mail Delivery Unsuccessful • You mistyped the email address. • You have attached an enormous file to the message. • One of the computers between you and the intended recipient across the Internet was not working properly. • No explanation for the failure.

  15. What is Spam? • Spam is the email equivalent of junk mail or nuisance phone calls. • It can be defined as all unsolicited electronic mail sent out in bulk to individuals or organizations that have not consented to receive it.

  16. Classifications of Spam • Unsolicited Commercial Emails (UCE). • Unsolicited Bulk Emails (UBE). • Chain Letters. • Emails that do not have valid addresses in the reply to line.

  17. Identifying a Spam Message • In the email subject line. • Watch out for strange symbols like $ or # or promises of free money, investment opportunities, etc. • Pretend to know you well, e.g. Hi there!
