Customized EmploymentThe Art of Job Creation Customized Employment is…. a flexible process designed to personalize the employment relationship between a job candidate and an employer a way that meets the needs of both the employer and the job seeker. based on an individualized match between the strengths, conditions, and interests of a job candidate and the identified business needs of an employer. Customized Employment utilizes an individualized approach to employment planning and job development — one person at a time . . . one employer at a time.

  9. Customized EmploymentThe Art of Job Creation Why Consider Job Creation? Job Seekers who may have higher support needs. When someone has difficulty performing the typical job that exists. When the job requires multitasking and someone possibly has difficulty with that. Possibly when someone needs a high structured environment or can only sustain work activity for an hour at a time. From the business side it’s all about meeting an unmet need.

Address things such as; when are the busiest times - rush times? What tasks are performed on a sporadic basis? Where are the bottlenecks or traffic jams? Are there any inefficient uses of key staff? Try to understand the work environment? Do you know the bottom line?

Job Analysis includes core and episodic routines Look for natural supports Look for supports that match what the job seeker needs Examine the culture

Task Analysis is a break down of the job functions step by step Very specific instruction on how to complete a task Documenting progress during each attempt Providing assistance/support where needed Reduction in support as learner accomplishes job

Starts with the informational interview Looks at the who, what, why, when, how Defines the task list (what do you mean) Outlines the benefits to the employers Used as a negotiation tool

What hours are you proposing if different than typical times? How much work does the employer want done each day? What pay? (Remember we are expecting minimum or above) What accommodations and supports are needed? How will all this help the business ? (show the benefits)

Summary: A one sentence description of the proposal Qualifications: If applicable, provide a brief narrative description of the qualifications of the person for whom the position is being created Benefits: A bulleted or narrative description of the benefits specific to the business being approach.

Tasks: A clear and concise, bulleted description of the tasks the customized position would require. Conditions: List specific conditions of the job. ( hours, pay, etc.) Employment Agency offers to: describe what the agency will provide Other : any additional information not yet listed to address concerns

Carve out a file clerk position from a clerical staff position. Create a mail delivery service at a company that has many departments (i.e. city hall) Add a greeter position at YMCA’s, health clubs, and other companies. (remember it has to be a benefit, a need for the employer)

Put together promotional packets for a marketing company. Work in the stock room at a retail store on shipment days. Break down boxes at a liquor store or warehouse.

Has to be based on the interest, skills of the job seeker – one person at a time- NOT group placements and NOT market driven. Relies on relationship building, natural supports and training. Informational Interviewing, job analysis, task analysis and job tryouts. Involves Negotiating Skills & Excellent Communications Skills The task is to find the best possible job match!!!!!

  35. Customized EmploymentThe Art of Job Creation NE AFP (Our Goal) Our goal is to double the employment rate for people with developmental disabilities by 2015. Of the 3487 people receiving some type of day services in Nebraska in 2006 , only 13% (444) were employed by a business in the community. Of those, 68% worked 20 hours a week or less, and 7% worked for less than minimum wage (source – NE APSE)
