  1. NEW IPO RULESFOR 2012IPO-VO Atzel vom Haus Agee 1992 - 2006 2013 Judges College Meeting Las Vegas, NV January 18-20, 2013

  2. IPO-VO • New title (International Preliminary Working Test) for dogs not quite ready for IPO-1 • May be referred to as “IPO Lite” • A passed BH/VT exam is required • All three phases included • Measured for Judges as 3 phases per entry for the 36/day maximum.

  3. IPO-VO • Experience has been fun for handlers, spectators and Judges (at least one)! • Helps improve entry revenue for clubs! • Dogs must be minimum age of 15 months. • Worthwhile opportunity for handlers to learn the “trial experience” of a three phase kind of day!

  4. IPO-VO Tracking (Phase A) • Two legs laid by handler each of 100 paces, one 90º turn, one article • Age of track – 10 minutes minimum (consider maximum time)? • Must be completed within 10 minutes of the start • Assessment same as IPO • Less focus on speed, more on even tempo of the work

  5. IPO-VO Tracking (Phase A) • Article size is 15cm x 5cm x 1cm (roughly 6” x 2” x 0.5”) and color different from terrain • Temperament test prior to start in a neutral area • Assessment same as IPO

  6. IPO-VO Tracking (Phase A) • Point Distribution - Scent Pad = 10 - Legs = 59 - Turn = 10 - Article = 21

  7. IPO-VO Obedience (Phase B) • Requirements/Scoring - On leash healing = 30 - Off leash healing = 20 - Down with recall = 15 - Retrieve = 10 - Jump over hurdle = 10 - Down/distraction = 15

  8. IPO-VO Obedience (Phase B) • Some notable stuff - All assessments are basically the same as IPO. - Healing exercises require no change of pace, but a RT and LT must be shown after the AT. - May have personal article and minimum distance throw is 5 paces

  9. IPO-VO Obedience (Phase B) • Some notable stuff (cont’d) - Jump commands are “hupp and here” - Exception: For the jump over the hurdle, handler may move a couple of paces with command to jump! - Long down only 20 paces away and points require at least exercises 1-3!

  10. IPO-VO Protection (Phase C) • Requirements/Scoring - Bark and Hold = 15 - Prevent escape = 30 - Attack on handler = 50 - Transport = 5 • Report on Leash

  11. IPO-VO Protection (Phase C) • Hold and Bark (15 Points) - Sent from 20 paces - Handler comes in after a while (? time) and holds dog by the collar. - Assessment similar to IPO, bothering helper – up to 3 points, strong gripping – up to 12 points, leaving helper may be “M” exercise

  12. IPO-VO Protection (Phase C) • Helpers Escape (30 Points) - May be done right from the blind - No “go” command is required - Outs are scored same as IPO - Handler goes to dog as instructed by Judge and immediately holds collar.

  13. IPO-VO Protection (Phase C) • Attack on the handler and dog (50 points) - After escape with handler holding dog, helper walks away in normal pace - After 20 paces helper turns and attacks handler/dog and must make noise/threats - Handler releases dog to defend against attack while handler stays in place - Handler goes to dog as instructed by Judge and immediately holds collar.

  14. IPO-VO Protection (Phase C) • Transport to Judge (5 Points) - Transport distance is minimum 10 paces - Leash may be placed while in the “guarding” position - No mention of “disarming” activity - Dog should be between handler and helper and attentive - Phase C now completed at reporting out to Judge.

  15. IPO-VO Summary • Current rules may be somewhat vague in places, e.g., questions about heeling pattern, hurdle height, etc. • Work with clubs and handlers to set the guidelines for the trial (we all need to be on the same page).

  16. IPO-VO Summary • Maintain integrity of the rules so handlers become familiar with requirements , expectations and the standards we set forth. • This is a meaningful “preliminary test” and need not be minimized as some “non big titles” have in the past. • It can be a lot of fun!

  17. Questions and Discussion Questions Points??

  18. Teaching Ol’ Dogs, New Tricks Michael, I am too old for this. I like my VO in a glass!!! Mike, this is the new and exciting dogsport IPO-VO!!!
