  2. Women- • Shed the ties to their past • Defined their individuality: use of make-up, cutting their hair, & wearing shorter skirts • They also began smoking & drinking in public

  3. THE FLAPPER

  4. Fads and Crazes- • Flagpole sitting- people competed for records • Slang- a new vocabulary emerged • Dance marathons- the CHARLESTON! • Games- Ouija boards, crossword puzzles

  5. Harry Houdini entertained crowds as an escape artist

  6. Another craze in the 1920s was airplane stunts: transfers and wing walking!

  7. Charles Lindbergh flew from NY to Paris in 1927; first solo trans-Atlantic flight. It took him 33 ½ hours. Greatly promoted the new aviation industry.

  8. Sports in the 1920s- • BOXING- Jack Dempsey became a heavyweight champion in 1921. • BASEBALL- Babe Ruth, played for both the Boston Red Sox & New York Yankees • In addition to watching sports, people also participated in recreational activities in greater numbers.

  9. 1920s is also referred to as the JAZZ AGE
