  2. abate • Verb. To become weaker, to decrease [When rob lost his job he became abate from watching television all day] • Unabated- adjective. Showing no sign of weakening; showing no decrease [John’s high opinion of himself was unabated when his grades lowered - he remained self-confident.]

  3. Acknowledge • Verb- To admit the existence of. [She acknowledged that she was hiding a secret from me after I bothered her for a long time, but she wouldn’t tell it to me.] 2. To express recognition or thanks for. [We acknowledged Martin Luther King, Jr.’s, speech with loud applause..]

  4. agent • Noun- A person who acts or does business for another [We didn’t know the laws about selling our house, so our real estate agent helped us.] 2. Something that brings about a result. [Vinegar is a chemical agent that reacts violently with baking soda.]

  5. authority • Noun- The right to give orders, make decisions, or take action. [Teachers have authority over students because teachers are generally older, wiser, and better-informed than students.] 2. An expert source of information. [Mr. T is an authority on vocabulary; he seems to know every word ever!] • Authorities, noun- A group of people who have the right to enforce laws. [If you are in trouble, you should contact the authorities, and they will help you.]

  6. devastate • Verb- To ruin or destroy completely. [Hurricane Charley devastated Florida, causing millions of dollars in damage.] Devastating,adjective- causing destruction. [Hurricane Charley was a devastating storm.] Devastation,noun- great destruction. [Hurricane Charley caused massive devastation.]

  7. epidemic • Noun- the rapid spreading of a disease to many people at one time [The swine flu is a world-wide epidemic.] Adjective. Spreading rapidly as a disease over wide area. [Technology’s epidemic spread has brought cell phones to people who don’t even have running water.]

  8. estimate • Noun- A number that is not exact; a careful guess. [the estimate times that people eat spiders is three times a year.] (eww) Verb- to figure out roughly; to make an approximate calculation. [it hakes approximately 20 minuets to get to the Monmouth mall]

  15. infuriate • Verb- to make very angry. [Sometimes kids infuriate there parents on purpose just because they can!] ahh!

  22. trek • Noun- a long, slow, and, difficult journey. [ Our trek through the dessert was life- threatening.] Verb- To travel slowly and with difficulty. [ When we trekked to Florida, it took forever and was really hard!]
