English 10AP November 19, 2013 Objective: Students will begin working with Garrett Hardin’s excerpt from Lifeboat. They will take Cornell notes, relate back to the prompt, and discuss the text. EU: Communication determines meaning. How? Why? When? Agenda: DGP Review “The Happy Life” Reading with Cornell Notes: Lifeboat HW: Choose a selection from the Community Unit in TLoC and choose 5 Exploring the Text questions to complete on Evernote. (Monday’s will be due Wednesday, Wednesday’s will be due Friday).

Review “The Happy Life” • Unhappiness can come from you having problems- something didn’t work. • Stop thinking about what you don’t have. • HEDONISM: Living life for pleasure • Virtue- Don’t do something just to be virtuous • Your heart and mind have to match up to be happy • Don’t be miserable to make someone else happy • Do things because you want to do them • You shouldn’t have to think about making good decisions • Self-denial can lead you to unhappiness • You shouldn’t put others in front of you all the time.
