  1. NCSD Math Review Team Update for Board of Education May 22, 2019

  2. Vision Students Employers Alumni Faculty

  3. Students will say… My teachers understand my prior knowledge, expect me to explain my thinking and I can. I like math and it is fun, hands-on and engaging. I get to make choices about what and how I learn. I finally “get it” and understand math, get to work with my peers and understand the purpose of what I am learning.

  4. Alumni will say… There were connections in my learning from year to year, I was prepared for post high school choices, I wasn’t taught what to think but how to think, I understand how numbers work, I saw a purpose for my learning/connection to real world, I liked math, I know that math is more than computation- it’s based on patterns and relationships, my teachers cared about me and my learning.

  5. Employers will say… We love Newark grads. They are problem solvers, have teamwork and collaboration skills, are ready for the workforce, have a strong math base and are able to think on their own, have the skills to do mental math, have abstract thinking skills and make critical choices that are innovative.

  6. Faculty will say… Our curriculum is enjoyable to teach and it is rewarding to see students making connections in the classroom and also able to apply it outside of the classroom. Lessons are well planned and student centered. Students are developing a good understanding of standards. We enjoy seeing students engaged and enjoying math, enjoy teaching math-it is our favorite time of day, students are persevering, collaborating, and pushing/motivating each other. Math is woven throughout the school day and administration supports out of the box thinking.

  7. Our Process • Review of curriculum maps and learning standards • Examination of best practices/Standards for Mathematical Practice • Professional development opportunities • Examination of resources that align with criteria- beliefs and vision • Visitations to high performing schools and schools making significant growth using identified programs • Program Reps • K-12 Team Consensus
