  5. What is culture ??? Culture is a way of life of a group of people - the behaviors, beliefs, values, and symbols that they accept, generally without thinking about them, and that are passed along by communication and imitation from one generation to the next “Customs and Practices”

  6. It’s the way we do things here !!!! The safe way or the unsafe way ?? Our hidden values and beliefs !!!! This give rise to the Spice Girls Syndrome !

  8. PERHAPS MORE CONTROVERSIALLY WHAT WE GET IS WHAT WE ARE PREPARED TO ACCEPT !

  15. Managers talk about the things that are important to them, people get meaning from this and make decisions on how they carry out tasks ! Safely or Unsafely

  16. WHEN IT COMES TO ACCIDENT PERFORMANCE THEREFORE WE GET DIFFERENT RESULTS !

Some basic beliefs • I do not go to work and expect to get hurt. • I do not believe that anybody should expect to go to work and get hurt. • People get hurt • Causes individual pain and suffering • Upset and heartache for the family • Despite industry myth - nobody is invincible - the male macho image must be eliminated. • Every single employee has an invaluable contribution to make.

WELL POISONERS Only ensure rules are followed when it suits Set a bad example in their own behaviour Might say “You don’t do that your not safe, leave it to me Turn a blind eye when it suits Allow horseplay in the workplace Encourage people to work unsafely when it suits See RA & SSOW as a nuisance Value getting the job done above everything Believe that accidents are inevitable and the fault of the individual 27

  27. Players Concerned about their own safety Understand the importance of following SSOW Always wear their PPE Work in a safe manner most of the time Ignore their mate who is working unsafely Do not think that they can make a difference GOOD ATTITUDE – LOW INFLUENCE

  32. Engaging and gaining commitment from FLM is essential to underpinning the desired culture – in the middle of the night THEY set the standard !

DOING: The right things DOING AND BEING SEEN: People aware of your influence and actions being directed at the right things DOING AND BEING SEEN AND BEING BELIEVED: People feeling your leadership and actions directed at the right things and sensing that it really matters to you

  34. LEARNING TO DRIVE • Unconscious incompetence • We do not know what we cannot do • Conscious incompetence • We know we cannot do it • Conscious competence • We know we can do it and are aware • Subconscious competence • We are on auto-pilot DANGER !!!!!!

  35. What does it all mean ? It means EVERYONE, working together, can make a difference !

  36. Please remember Safety is not about initiatives which run for a week or a month IT’S A WAY OF LIFE !!

Some Keys to Success • Stable Environment • Good foundations • Considered Risk Assessments – gap analysis carried out against regulations and guidance. • Effective SSOW that people can and do follow. • Managers who display • “Visible Demonstrated Leadership” • Value Safety Reps and support them fully • Involve everyone in the process • Understand people, talk openly and honestly

  39. If this is a journey how far do you have to travel to know that you have achieved the ultimate destination of a totally safe environment ?
