  1. Angles of Elevation and Depression Geometry H2(Holt 8-4) K.Santos

  2. Angles of elevation and depression Airplane angle of depression angle of elevation person angle of depression---looking down (as opposed to straight ahead) angle of elevation—looking up (as opposed to straight ahead) angle of depression = angle of elevation

  3. Example: A surveyor stands 200 ft from a building to measure its height with a 5-ft tall theodolite. The angle of elevation to the top of the building is 35. How tall is the building? 35 200’ 5’ tan 35 = x = 200 tan 35 x = 140 ft Height of building = 140 + 5 = 145 ft

  4. Example: An airplane flying 3500 ft above ground begins a 2 descent to land at an airport. How many miles from the airport is the airplane when it starts its decent? 2 descent is angle of depression Angle of elevation is also 2 2 3500’ airport Remember to convert to miles:

  5. Example: Two office buildings are 80 ft apart. The height of the taller building is 350 ft. The angle of depression from the top of the taller building to the top of the shorter building to the top of the shorter building is 15. Find the height of the shorter builder to the nearest foot. 350’ 80’

  6. Example: An observer in a light house is 69 ft. above the water. He sights two boats in the water directly in front of him. The angle of depression to the nearest boat is 48. The angle of depression to the other boar is 22. What is the distance between the two boats? Round answer to the nearest foot. 69 y x
