  3. Islam • Began in Arabia in the 600s. • Muslim = follower of Islam • Swept through Northern Africa, the Middle East

  4. Charles Martel (Charlemagne) #97 • Battle of Tours (732) • Sign from God? Christian victory in France • 46 year reign fighting Muslims • Reunited much of the old Roman Empire • Missidominici – officials to check on grievences, ensure justice • Established schools to unify his Kingdom (language, accurate records) • His death = break up of power & lands = feudalism & diff. countries in Europe • Furthered the blending of Germanic, Christian, & Roman traditions • Set up strong, efficient governments • Extended Christian civilization

Built an empire greater than any known since Rome (Holy Roman Empire); created unified Christian Europe • He was crowned HRE by Pope Leo who was having problems with rebellious nobles in Rome. • Pope had more power than a king. Led to future problems between Popes & Germanic Kings • Outraged the emperor of the Eastern Roman Empire • Deepened the split between Eastern and Western Christian World
