  3. IOOS, COOS and Education A Workshop Sponsored by SouthEast COSEE, Ocean.us, SC Sea Grant Consortium and NOAA/Coastal Services Center Date: March 21-23, 2004 Location: NOAA/CSC, Charleston, SC Attendees: 63 people from COOS, COSEE, NOAA, NSF, NASA, DLESE, etc.

Objectives • To initiate a network associated COOS/IOOS and the K-16 and informal education effort • To develop strategies/recommendations for integrating formal and informal education opportunities into IOOS operations • To identify exemplary website components of present and potential application for COOS/IOOS education efforts.

South Atlantic Bight WAVE FACTS • Height and period of surface waves are strongly affected by the wide continental shelf--some 100-115 km (60-70 miles) off SC and GA. • Larger, longer period, open ocean waves “feel” the bottom well offshore in this region, reducing the wave energy before reaching shore. • Good surfing waves are found where ocean swell hits beaches at the edge of a narrow shelf -- Cape Hatteras, NC. • Winter storm winds--40-60 km/h (25-35 miles/h); duration of more than 24 hours; a fetch of 500-1000 km (300-600 miles)-- generate waves of a height of 5 m +(15 ft+) at mid-shelf locations (water depths of 25-30 m, or 80-100 feet) at 50 km ( 30 miles) offshore. The wave period of only 8-12 seconds creates steep-sided waves. • Hurricanes form large waves only if they travel slowly (longer duration winds over a given fetch).

Fisher East Carolina University NC Museum of Natural History Natural Science Center Discovery Place 9 12 8 5 1 2 During 2003-2004, 28 teachers from the Ocean Sciences Education Leadership Institute partnered with 12 SEPORT institutions to offer 6-hour Ocean Awareness Days.
