The ADEIL Awards celebrate excellence in distance education and independent learning. Nominate outstanding staff or submit a course or research project. Winners receive a certificate and monetary prize. Awards will be presented at the ADEIL conference in Oxford, MS on Oct. 15-17, 2019.

  2. ADEIL Awards Each year, ADEIL presents a number of awards recognizing excellence in various aspects of distance education and independent learning. Award winners receive a certificate and a monetary prize. Award categories: • College Level Course Award • High School Course Award • Excellence in Support Services Award • Research Award If you are a current ADEIL member, next year consider nominating an outstanding staff member from your institution or colleague in the field, or perhaps submitting a course or research project. Awards will be presented at the annual ADEIL conference held in Oxford, MS, Oct. 15-17, 2019.

  3. 2018 College Course Award

  4. College Level Course Award The ADEIL College Level Course Award honors the most outstanding college level credit course that opened during the previous year. The award recognizes the accomplishment of the instructor, author, primary editor and/or course developer who worked together to create an exemplary course. This includes any distance education or online learning course that may be online or print-based using a study guide. The awards committee evaluates the overall design, content, learning activities, and assessments for each entry. The award includes a $50 prize and a certificate.

College Level Course Award Nominee University of Missouri, Mizzou Online Health Sciences 1000: Introduction to the Health Sciences Ruth Crozier with Carmen Beck, Instructional Designer “Students receive enough information to help them make a decision, but not so much that they are overwhelmed. Ruth really considered her students’ needs when making design decisions in this course.”

Faculty and TAs were also satisfied with the rigor and the quality of the assignments turned in.”

College Level Course Award Nominee Ashford University BUS 402 Strategic Management Bill Davis, Assistant Professor Forbes School of Business & Technology and Jeff Simmons, Instructional Designer Bridgepoint Education “We scaffolded the course each week so students can learn and build a section of their strategic plan. The course builds on their knowledge.”

College Level Course Award Nominee Ashford University MGT 330 Management for Organizations Bill Davis, Assistant Professor Forbes School of Business & Technology and Jeff Simmons, Instructional Designer Bridgepoint Education “This course has shown significant improvement as far as student performance (grades) and also with student satisfaction. EOCS surveys are positive and high in several categories.”

  12. “The professor’s welcome video does a very good job both inviting students into the course, while having an appropriate serious tone for a capstone course.” - judge

  13. College Level Course Award Nominee University of Mississippi, iStudy Eng 510 IS Sec 1 Modern English Grammar IS Course Developers: Michael C. Raines, Ph.D., Instructor, and Kerry O’Donoghue, instructional designer “All students are required to find Quirks of the Week, which are interesting grammatical items to be pondered while working through advanced English grammar. The intent is not to "solve" grammar but to take note of all the diversity of English, making the somewhat dry grammatical concepts more alive and relevant to students’ lives.”

  14. “In particular, one aspect of the course design stood out to me: the incorporation of campus backdrops with the instructor introduction. I think that this is huge; it establishes a campus connection for online students, reinforcing the fact that they really are U Miss students.” - judge “Creative idea for the students to post the ‘quirks’.” - judge “The intent is not to "solve" grammar but to take note of all the diversity of English, making the somewhat dry grammatical concepts more alive and relevant to students’ lives.”

College Level Course Award Nominee University of Mississippi, iStudy SRA 371: Camp Leadership IS Course Developers: David Waddell, Instructor, and Kerry O’Donoghue, Instructional Designer “Camp Leadership covers training for camp counseling, including programming, campcraft skills, and a survey of the field of camping. To make a completely online camping course relevant and useful to Parks and Recreation students, Mr. Waddell included three unique and interesting projects: a campsite evaluation, a campcraft skills presentation video, and a campout journal and presentation.”

  16. “Excellent course! Easy to navigate and professional designed. Well done!” - judge “One strong indication of a course is a judge’s reluctance to leave the course and go on to review another. I was reluctant to leave this course.”

College Level Course Award Nominee University of Wisconsin Independent Learning U400-227 Intermediate French Language and Culture Course Developers: Kristine Pierick, Jaclyn Mauer, Sage Goellner “Some key features of the course include providing students with a ton of great study resources, faculty using YouSeeU to engage in meet-and-greets with each student and students engaging in multiple activities for reflection.”

College Level Course Award Nominee University of Wisconsin Independent Learning U200-115 Human Biology with U200-115L Human Biology Lab Course Developers: Eric Peloza, Nick Meyer, Rachel Portinga “Leverages the latest technology in media for students to engage in module discussions and experience role playing, as well as faculty using media to offer clarification videos to help build knowledge connections.”

  20. “The lightroom videos are SO useful being able to see the instructor draw on a board. The lab that goes with the course is done really well with instructional videos to follow along at home.” “Can move laterally or easily use the table of contents” - judge

College Level Course Award Nominee University of Wisconsin Independent Learning U448-393 The Civil War Era, 1848-1877 Course Developers: Kristine Pierick, Nick Meyer, Jesse Gant “Students view and reflect on different films and television series that relate to the course material and faculty use media to narrate presentations and discuss key artifacts from the time period.”

  31. High School Course Award The ADEIL High School Course Award honors an outstanding pre-collegiate level (K–12) course that opened during the previous year. The award recognizes the accomplishment of the instructor, author, primary editor and/or course developer who worked together to create an exemplary course. The awards committee evaluates the overall design, content, learning activities, and assessments for each entry. The award includes a $50 prize and a certificate.

High School Course Award Nominee Brigham Young University FREN-041-T003: First-Year French, Part 1 Course Developer: Elizabeth Robinson “The course uses computer, TA, and instructor-graded assignments, live conversation cafes for the students to practice the language and speaking appointments to demonstrate progress with the instructor.”

  33. “The learning outline (attitudes and goals of the students) in Course Intro is really cool!” “I really like the flashcards and practice exercises.”

High School Course Award Nominee The University of Mississippi High School HS H 002 Physical Education Developed by Coach Gary Enis, instructor, and Kerry O’Donoghue and Jessica Byrd, instructional designers “While its main focus is teaching about lifelong fitness, the big instructional challenge was to create assignments to get students out from behind their computer and moving.”

  36. High School Course Award Nominee The University of Mississippi High School HS SS 016 AP World History Developed by Alisa A. Bourne, MBA, and Kerry O’Donoghue, instructional designer “This course makes extensive use of multimedia. It has unique activities such as the GRAPES charts, which cover Geographic influences, Religious influences, Cultural Achievements, Political structures, Economic structures, and Social structures for each topic.”

HS SS 016 ver 1 AP World History UMHSDeveloped by Kerry O’Donoghue and Alisa BourneNominated by Gerry Kane “This course is structured around the investigation of five themes and nineteen key concepts, in six different time periods. The key concepts support the investigation of historical developments within the time periods, while the themes allow students to make crucial connections across the time periods and across geographical regions.”

  43. Excellence in Support Service Award The Excellence in Support Service Award is given to an individual who has contributed to support a distance education/independent learning unit, with possible implications for other institutions. The award recognizes the person’s outstanding contributions and innovations to a distance education program via courses, recruitment, orientation, etc. Persons who may qualify for consideration are instructional designers or developers, information technologists, and IT or enrollment support staff. The award includes a $50 prize and a certificate.

Excellence in Support Service Nominee Dr. Sarah Korpi Director, Independent Learning Program University of Wisconsin-Madison nominated by David Werther “Highly consistent and adapts and adds value wherever she goes. ” “Very impactful and transformational for the organization and a good managerial example for the community.”

Excellence in Support Service Nominee Dr. Aisha Haynes Assistant Director and Instructional Designer,CTE online learning program nominated by Cindy Merrow University of South Carolina “Great impact on several related organizations and leadership. Great example of productivity and reach.” “The nominee is an outstanding distance-education professional and has had a remarkably productive year. She is to be congratulated for her work in the fields of administration, teaching and research.”

  46. Excellence in Support Service Nominee Cathryn Friel Instructional Designer University of Missouri nominated by Evan Smith “Absolutely an outstanding asset! Nothing but team play here!! ” “Impressive impact on the organization and the community of Distance Education. Wide range of interests and contributions.”

Excellence in Support Service Nominee Renee Jacobi, MA Coordinator of Outreach Programs, iStudy University of Mississippi nominated by Gerry Kane “Sees the bigger picture and serves and supports with class. Great asset!!” “I was especially impressed with the following comment, 'She successfully adapted every level of our administrative process conceptually, and then followed through with technical solutions.' It is a rare individual who has both vision (conceptual abilities) and practical competence (technical solutions).”
