  2. Evaluation in RPL- Written Examinations, Practical Tests, Portfolios and Juries -

  3. So, you decided to get a certificate through the RPL process. Pretty good decision! Now, watch what you are required to do and what to expect in the process of examination. Let’s start!

  4. The RPL examination process focuses on the YOUR KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND LEARNING related to the qualification you wish to achieve. You need to demonstarte your abilities through a mixture of written tests, practical tests, a portfolio of evidence, and an interview with a panel or jury. Actually, your learning from experience is being evaluted.

  5. Take the First Step Get Advice and Apply If you took the first step of getting advice and applying for an RPL pathway to a qualification, you will be ‘enrolled’ in the RPL process. Do not be afraid of making mistakes along the way. Experts in the RPL process will guide you and give you the necessary time to prepare yourself for tests and interviews. They will ‘accompany’ you while you are collecting evidence for your portfolio.

  6. ThePre-Screening Stage When you apply to an RPL provider or Training Centre, you will be taken into the Pre-Screening Stage by your RPL advisor. Together with the advisor you will discuss the following: • The reason for RPL assessment and how it works • The relevance of skills and competences to match the standards of the qualification you are looking for • How a portfolio is prepared • How RPL practical tests are organised • How the examining panel or jury works • Your readiness to start collecting evidence for assessment.

  7. Collecting Evidence In some EU countries, candidate will start with collecting evidence for Portfolio Evaluation in the RPL process. In some countries, this stage is skipped and the candidate goes directly to an examination process. What is evidence ?Evidencecan be - – Writtentranscriptsfromworkplaceassessors – Demonstration of abilitiesthroughtasks – Records of activitiesundertaken – Supervisortestimonials – Audio visual presentation of work processes – Documentsfrom previous training (certificates, sign-in list or testimonials) – Examples of your work from previous jobs.

  8. After collecting documents, you are asked to demonstrate your competences, including your knowledge and skills.. Almost in all EU countries you may take one, two or all of the following: • Performing tasks / doing assignments • Written examinations • Completing a portfolio of evidence related to the qualification you are seeking • Interview/Jury about your portfolio.

  9. Written tests (only in some countries) In Written Tests you are asked to answer questions to assess your knowledge level. You may need to take several tests depending on your profession. In some professions a written test is not required. There are usually compulsory written tests in ‘risky’ occupations such as: • occupational health and safety in construction and manufacturing • quality standard in the field of medicines and food • Care of vulnerable or ill persons. Written test could take from 1 hour to a half-day. Your advisor will give you information about them.

  10. ‘Show Time’ After formal written tests, it is time to ‘perform’ Practical Tests. In practical tests, you are asked to do a specific task in an RPL Centre to the expected standard for the occupation. This task is usually similar to ‘real work’ in a workplace. You are observed during the task by assessors. In some countries, this process is recorded by camera instead. In some cases, a practical task can be carried out in a workplace and examined there.

  11. The Practical Test In the practical test, you must be careful about taking all the necessary precautions for health and safety. You should ask your RPL advisor in advance about the rules of the practical test and about how your performance will be judged. That way you are better prepared.

  12. Practical Test So that there is a good match between an RPL pathway to a qualification and the traditional, college pathway, RPL Candidates are provided with course outlines and performance checklists, in addition to texts and other course resources. Candidates are assessed on the specific learning outcomes and performance standards for the qualification. This is important for trust and confidence in the certificate among employers and the public.

  13. Interview with a Jury • In some counties there is interview or jury system instead of written or practical tests. • In this interview or jury system, you are asked to talk about your experience in relation to the qualification you are looking for. You may be asked to show your portfolio evidence and to answer questions from the jury. A Jury can have 3-5 experts from the relevant area.

  14. Achieving the Certificate • If you pass all your written or practical tests, and/or your interview with the Jury, you are awarded the certificate in full. • You might pass ‘part’ of the certificate requirements and then achieve the rest through formal courses. • It can take 6 months to 3 years to achieve a certificate depending on the occupational level, the size of the qualification, and the time you have to work on the RPL process.
