  1. Dreams

  2. The Content of Dreams • Dreams: the mental activity found during sleep • Research shows that most dreams are dull, daily activities • Dull dreams more common early in the night • Usually can only remember the last 15 min. of a dream • That feeling of being “dropped into the middle of a story”

  3. The Content of Dreams • The dreams we remember/write down are usually more dramatic, coherent, sexier, more interesting • Emotional contends to be more negative (sad, angry, scared) • Dreams happen in real time. • Nightmares add a feeling of dread.

  4. Freud and Dreams • Dreams are caused by activities of the day trigger unconscious negative impulses (desires) • These negative impulses are let out in dreams. • Displacement (Freud): when a socially unacceptable dream-element is replaced with a more acceptable one. Obvious Sexual Object

  5. Jung and Dreams • The Collective Unconscious: the collective experiences of humans in their evolutionary past • Birth, death, the sun, sex, heroes, etc. • When a person does not fully live up to the collective unconscious, it spills out into our dreams.

  6. Dream Interpretation: A bunch of hooey! • Dreaming as the by-product of random neurons in the brain. • Interpretation not scientific: claims cannot be proven, no way to replicate results • French horns as fallopian tubes?! Seriously!?!?

  7. How to Remember Your Dreams • Before you fall asleep, remind yourself (politely) to remember your dreams. Don’t be forceful or demanding. • Keep a pen and paper ready for that “Ah-ha!” moment. • Write down what you recall before you get up/ start to think about the day ahead.
