  2. Statistics • Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States, and the leading cause of serious, long-term disability. • On average, someone in the U.S. suffers a stroke every 45 seconds; every 3.1 minutes, someone dies of a stroke (Stroke Statistics, 2006).

  3. Treatments • Currently, there is one approved drug-therapy treatment for ischemic stroke called tissue-type plasminogen activator, or tPA. • There is a new ‘clot busting’ treatment on the horizon called desmodus rotundus plasminogen activator, or DSPA derived from vampire bat saliva.

  4. Conclusion • More research still needs to be completed, but the outlook for DSPA looks very promising. This is excellent news for the public because it gives us a much better chance of surviving a traumatic ischemic stroke, and to avoid a life-long debilitation that often results.
