  10. Community Needs Survey Demographics • 713 submissions • 71% were People with PD & 20% were Carepartners • 79% were in the 60-79 age range, with 13% being in the <30-59 age range, and 8% being in the 80+ age range

  19. World Parkinson CongressKyoto, JapanJune 3rd-7th Parkinson Society BC staff and members attended the 5th World Parkinson Congress (WPC) in Kyoto, Japan. The Congress unites the global Parkinson’s community to inspire hope and share knowledge, self-management tools, and research findings.

  20. WPC - Scholarships The Society proudly funded scholarships for 10 attendees, including people with Parkinson’s, carepartners, and healthcare professionals. We were also happy to meet a number of attendees who travelled from BC independently.

  21. Posters • PSBC had two posters chosen to be displayed in the Exhibition Hall at WPC! - Counselling Program - Online Support Groups

  22. Highlights • Dr. Shinya Yamanaka from Japan. • Dr. Yamanaka won the Nobel prize for the discovery that mature cells can be reprogrammed to become pluripotent. These cells can give rise to all the cells that make up the human body including neurons. • https://gladstone.org/our-science/people/shinya-yamanaka

Dr. Jun Takahashi is a neurosurgeon and Dr. Masayo Takahashi is a researcher creating cell stock for regenerative medicine such as the retinal cells used for macular degeneration research. • The trial strategy is to derive dopaminergic progenitors from induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells and inject them into the putamen, a round structure located at the base of the forebrain. • Surgeons will drill two small holes through a patient’s skull and use a specialized device to inject roughly 5 million cells.

  24. The team plans to recruit seven patients and follow them for 2 years post injection. • The first patient received an injection on one side of the brain last November (2018) and, after a six month wait to ensure safety, the plan is to inject the other side as well.

Other Interesting Topics were.. • Anxiety detrimentally impacts activities of daily living in PWP, even more so than motor symptoms. • Cognitive impairment – people who are supine and tilted slightly (30%) have increased cognitive ability. When they stand, their cognitive ability decreases. • Appendix is a source of misfolded alpha-synuclein that could seed pathology in Parkinson’s disease patient brain, therefore implying that the appendix could be a site of disease origin • Gastroparesis or delayed emptying of the stomach exits in many people with PD.

Speakers and Topics PLENARY: MARK MAPSTONE, PHD will give an overview of non-motor symptoms of Parkinson’s, and discuss strategies to promote cognitive health for people living with the disease. He will end by describing some of his work, and the work of others, on early detection of Parkinson’s using biomarkers obtained from blood. From his research, there is hope to develop reliable biomarkers for clinical use. BREAKOUT SESSIONS ON... Nutrition, cognitive changes, fall prevention, symptom and medication management, and more!

TRAVEL SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE • We will be offering a limited number of scholarships for people with Parkinson’s, family carepartners, and healthcare professionals who reside in BC to attend Moving Forward, Together. • Scholarships will help to cover registration, accommodation, and travel costs.
