Techniques for Adding and Subtracting Measurements in Feet and Inches
This chapter focuses on the methods for accurately adding and subtracting measurements expressed in feet and inches. Through examples, such as adding 4 ft 7 in to 2 ft 10 in, we demonstrate the process of adjusting units when total inches exceed 12. You'll learn to convert inches to feet as needed. Similarly, for subtraction, we address situations requiring borrowing, like subtracting 2 ft 8 in from 11 ft 6 in, guiding you through the necessary steps to ensure precise calculations.

Adding and Subtracting Measurement Chapter 6 Section 12
How do we add measurement? • Example: 4 ft 7 in • + 2 ft 10 in • Add like normal 6 ft 17 in • 17 inches? We can’t have that since 17 inches is bigger than 12 inches. See our BFF just to be sure. • Change 17 inches into feet and inches • Take 17 ÷ 12 and find a remainder. • So 1 ft 5 in and add that to 6 ft • 6 ft • + 1 ft 5 in • 7 ft 5 in
What about subtraction? • Example: 11 ft 6 in • - 2 ft 8 in • Can we subtract 6 and 8? • We need to borrow! How many do we borrow? • Right we have to borrow 12 inches since we are taking it from 1 foot! • Add the 12 inches to the 6 inches there • And now subtract like normal!
Let’s try some together • 1) 8 ft 4 in 2) 11 ft 5 in+ 7 ft 11 in- 9 ft 10 in
