It can foster Community spirit through Clubs and local teams.” ********* “A National audit of Sports facilities in 2006 identified that investment of around £110 million a year is needed for the next 25 years to bring them up to an acceptable standard.”

  3. Club History Season 2009/2010 saw the Club enter its 21st year in existence. Since our formation it has always been our objective to function as an integral part of the community and to foster and promote a family spirit. In this time we have progressed from a club with only ‘one’ team using the playing fields at Fernieside Primary School as our base to a Club currently running teams from Soccer 4’s through to the Amateur Team as well as a successful ‘Kids School’ with all Youth teams based at our facility at Gilmerton Park. Our Progress Since 1989 the Club has grown in both size and stature and are one of the best run ‘Family’ orientated clubs in Edinburgh with a facility at Gilmerton Park which is the envy of most teams in Edinburgh. We are also a Soccer 4’s centre on a Saturday morning, with teams coming to our venue from Edinburgh, East Lothian and Midlothian We were presented with the SFA Quality Mark ‘Standard’ Award in April 2009. The Club would not be where it is today without the efforts of the many volunteers, coaches, parents and friends. We could not have made the improvements without assistance of local community bodies, South Edinburgh Partnership, SportScotland, The City of Edinburgh Council, BBC SCOTLAND Children in Need, WREN, PMR Leisure and most important of all our Main Sponsor ‘Bernard Hunter Crane Hire’. 3

  7. 5 YEAR PLAN Management Committee sat down and worked out a plan for the next 5 years. Proposed All weather facility 20m x 15m Proposed all weather facility 54m x 36m Clubrooms

  8. PLANNING • Five Year Plan • Contacted CEC Housing Department • Contacted 3 Sports Leisure Consultants • Neighbourhood Partnership Grant • Contacted 3 Sports Companies for estimates.

  9. HOW TO ACQUIRE THE FUNDING FERNIESIDE

HOW DID WE ACQUIRE THE FUNDING? • BBC Scotland Children in Need application turned down initially. • Turned to WREN (Waste Recycling and Environment) • Assistance of PMR Leisure managed to get BBC Scotland Children inNeed application back on track. • Awarded £33,000 from BBC Scotland Children in Need • Awarded £23,000 from WREN, which meant we had too much money. • Selected company ALLSPORTS (Now Greenfield Sports). • Extra funding – Additional features – Overhead netting and Floodlighting. • Installation around 8/10 weeks.

BENEFITS? • 3G astroturf is fantastic and allows the Club to use the facility 24/7, 365 days a year. • It is solely used by Fernieside FC, although Gilmerton Primary School have used it during term time. • All age groups from the Kids School through to the Amateur team have use of the facility. • We now have a training base for all youngsters • We can use the facility during the Winter months due to the floodlights and do not have training fees for the younger teams. • We have an extra 3g area which allows exercises to take place whilst other youngsters are playing football or working on their basic skills. • We do not lose footballs due to the overhead netting. • Parents can sit in the Clubrooms attached to the facility, watching their youngsters train, enjoy a coffee/tea or watch television. • Parents know that they can leave their youngsters in a safe and secure environment.

  14. FUTURE! Many more challenges, both known and as yet unknown remain in the running of Community Clubs, however with the support and guidance of all our supporters, sponsors, club members and volunteers, FERNIESIDE FC look forward to our next immediate 10 years during which time we will continue to offer improved facilities and equal opportunity to all members of our local community.
