The Raid John Brown wished to incite an armed slave revolt in the South that could have led to freedom. To do that, he needed to arm the slaves. The Federal Armory in Harpers Ferry was the closest supply of weapons that brown could raid, so on October 16th, 1859, he rallied a total of 21 men to fight along side of him: five black men and sixteen white men.
October 16 • Cut the telegraph lines, preventing communication with the outside world • Captured an incoming train; killed a freed slave; allowed the train to pass • Captured the armory
October 17 • Villagers cut off the exits to the town • Brown took hostages and moved them to a smaller building (John Brown’s Fort) • Attempted to surrender • Robert E. Lee began the counterattack against Brown
October 18 • Brown refused surrender • Marines stormed the fort • All rebels were captured in less than three minutes and jailed The Aftermath • Brown was hanged December 2nd later that year
The North’s View • Generally backed up Brown’s raid • Thought that he was a sacrifice for the sins of slavery • Died a martyr for abolitionism
The South’s View • Feared a copy-cat attack • Trained average citizens to become soldiers, preparing them for a war • Associated Brown with the Republican Party
The Republican’s View • Attempted to distance themselves with Brown • Feared that his association would cause them to lose the upcoming election
Cause for Fighting (North) • Brown gave a face to abolitionism • Before the raid, only peaceful protests against slavery were usedbut Brown proved that violence could be an effective solution • Avenging Brown
Cause For Fighting (South) • Feared the North would strike first in a similar attack • Lincoln was elected as a Republican, which the South associated with abolitionism because of Brown • Avenging innocent citizens in Harper’s Ferry
