A European lesson at my school... Susanne Smulders
What type of lesson did I teach? • I gave my students a questionnaire about stereotypes. • They had to tell me, as well as the other pupils in class, which • stereotypes came to their minds when • they thought of… • Holland • Germany • France • Sweden • Hungary
Stereotypes the students mentioned about other European countries.
The questionnaire I had the students fill in: • Where in Europe can you find the Big Ben? • Where in Europe can you find the Eiffel Tower? • What is the capital of Germany • In which country’s people eat a lot of pizza? • How many countries are around Holland? • Which country is the smallest country in Europe? And which one is the largest?
I concluded... From this questionnaire I concluded that the students thought the first four questions were the easiest ones to fill in, whereas the last two ones were somewhat harder for them. It was a bit surprising that so few of the students knew how many countries surrounded The Netherlands. The students gave all sorts of answers ranging from 3 to 5. Almost all the students thought Luxemburg was the smallest country in Europe.
