Worship Sunday August 4, 2013
Commanded in Scripture • Exodus 20:3-5 “You shall have no other gods before me…You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God…” • 1 Peter 2:9 “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies (praises) of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.”
Why is it Commanded? • God is God. Who or what else deserves our worship? Is there anything greater than our God? • We become like what we worship. • Worship power - become corrupt • Worship money - become greedy and materialistic • Worship sex - become full of lust and perversion • Worship self - become egotistical (at best) • Worship Christ - become Christlike
Why is it Commanded? • Our vision of God is expanded through worship. • Example: Psalm 8:3 “When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him?” • The psalmist’s mind is blown away at the greatness and vastness of God, but even more so when he thinks “and this God cares about me?” He has a revelation of the love the Father has for us His children through his worship of God the Creator.
What is Worship • Dozens of Greek and Hebrew words used for praise and worship throughout scripture. • Agalliao- jump for joy, exult, be exceedingly glad, with exceeding joy, rejoice • Acts 16:34 Now when he had brought them into his house, he set food before them; and he rejoiced, having believed in God with all his household.
What is Worship • Kampto- to bend • Romans 14:11 For it is written: "As I live, says the Lord, Every knee shall bow to Me, And every tongue shall confess to God." • Ephesians 3:14 For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ...
What is Worship • Humneo - to hymn, religious ode, to celebrate God in song, sing a hymn, praise • Acts 16:25 But at midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them.
What is Worship • Psallo - to play on a stringed instrument, make melody, sing, psalms • Ephesians 5:19 ...speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord... • Psalmos - a set piece of music, a sacred ode accompanied with the voice, harp or other instrument • 1 Corinthians 14:26 How is it then, brethren? Whenever you come together, each of you has a psalm, has a teaching, has a tongue, has a revelation, has an interpretation. Let all things be done for edification.
What is Worship • Barak-to kneel or bow, to give reverence to God as an act of adoration • Psalm 34:1 I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth. • Psalm 100:4 Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise. Be thankful to him, and bless his name. • Psalm 95:6 Oh come, let us worship and bow down; Let us kneel before the Lord our maker.
What is Worship • Guwl - to spin around • Psalm 32:11 Be glad in the Lord and rejoice, you righteous; And shout for joy, all you upright in heart! • Psalm 35:9 And my soul shall be joyful in the Lord; It shall rejoice in his salvation. • Psalm 118:24 This is the day the Lord has made; We will rejoice and be glad in it.
What is Worship • Hallal - to praise, to make a show or rave about, to glory in or boast upon, to be clamorously foolish about your adoration of God • Psalm 22:23 You who fear the Lord, praise him! All you descendants of Jacob, glorify him, and fear him, all you offspring of Israel! • Psalm 44:8 In God we boast all day long, and praise your name forever. Selah • Psalm 63:5 My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness, and my mouth shall praise you with joyful lips.
What is Worship • Ranan - to shout aloud for joy • Psalm 7:17 I will praise the Lord according to his righteousness, and will sing praise to the name of the Lord Most High. • Psalm 33:1 Rejoice in the Lord, O you righteous! For praise from the upright is beautiful. • Psalm 98:4 Shout joyfully to the Lord, all the earth; Break forth in song, rejoice, and sing praises
What is Worship • Tehillah - to sing hallal, a new song, a hymn of spontaneous praise glorifying God in song • Psalm 34:1 I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth. • Psalm 40:3 He has put a new song in my mouth -- praise to our God; Many will see it and fear, and will trust in the Lord. • Psalm 149:1 Praise the Lord! Sing to the Lord a new song, and his praise in the assembly of saints
What is Worship • Todah - an extension of the hand, adoration • Psalm 50:14 Offer to God thanksgiving, and pay your vows to the Most High. • Psalm 69:30 I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving. • Psalms 100:4 Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise. Be thankful to him, and bless his name.
When to Worship • All the time! • On the mountain top, in the valley, in the morning, in the evening, when all is right with the world and when nothing seems to be going right - Praise the Lord! • This doesn’t need to be fake • Don’t “fake it til you make it” • Don’t be ignorant and unrealistic • Be honest and vulnerable in your time of crisis and worship God from wherever you’re at! • Often times we start out lamenting and end up prophesying to our spirit and declaring the promises of God over our situations. (Ps. 22)
Shift in the Atmosphere • When we worship in the midst of our distress we are closing the door on the enemy and choosing to trust God. • If complaining and cursing is the language of the flesh (panic), praise and worship and thanksgiving is the language of the spirit (faith). • Paul and Silas praised and worshiped and their chains fell to the ground. (Acts 16) • David’s despair turned to joy and victory, and in the next chapter turned to the most comforting words written in the all the old testament. (Ps. 22 & 23) • King Jehosaphat in 2 Chronicles chapter 20 was facing eminent defeat but he chose to praise and worship rather than fight. • Worship changes things. Throughout these examples we see worship going up and God coming down.
