  13. Digital Divide • 75 % of Internet non-users reside in households where income is less than $15,000 per year • 87.2% of people with less than a high school diploma do not use the Internet • 68.4% of Hispanics and 60.2% of blacks are not online • Computers are too expensive

What Will Happen? • More broadband access will change how people use Internet and Web • Currently 42% of Americans use broadband • More ipods -> more music downloads • Virtual Private Networks will continue to grow • Intranets and Extranets will become more common • More “Web Services” will appear (XML,SOAP)

  15. Internet 2 • 200 universities and 60 corporations joined together to form a second Internet • Goal is “to ensure the transfer of new network technology and applications to the broader education and networking communities.”
