Amputations • Amputations refers to the loss of an entire limb or limb section. • Amputations are categorized as either acquired or congenital. • Acquired amputations result from disease, tumor, or trauma. • Congenital amputations result from failure of fetus development.
Incidence - Hundreds of thousands of people in the united states are amputees - More than 2/3 of these people are missing lower limb.
Domains • Children with limb deficiency often suffer from the three domains. • Feeling that might result from the stares or comments from their school-age peers.
Why Triathlon • increases self-esteem • encourages independence • enhances quality of life.
Triathlon • A triathlon consist of: • Swimming • Biking • Running Rudy Rudy Rudy
Equipment • A swim suit • Swim goggles • A bike (mountain, road, cross, Tri - any type) • A bike helmet • Running shoes
Benefits of Program • Muscular strength • Muscular Endurance • Flexibility
Prosthetics • The prosthetic device is designed to compensate for the functional loss of the limb. • It provides individuals with the most realistic sense of normal foot function.
Training/Modifications • Swimming: • A swim suit • Swim goggles • Pool- swim 25 yards (or half- lap – the length of the pool and back) nonstop.
Training/Modifications • Biking: • Using Prosthetics: • bike two to three times a week for at least 10-15 minutes at a time: • Around a track or park were I will be able to monitor.
Training/Modifications • Running: • Using Prosthetics: children will be able to run or walk for 5-10 min non-stop around the track.
Goal • After completing this 6 week program, students should be able to: • swim 50 yards (or one lap – the length of the pool and back) nonstop • bike two to three times a week for at least 30 minutes at a time • run or walk nonstop three to four times a week for 10 to 15 minutes each time
Reinforcements • Students will receive a medal for their efforts. • A field-trip to go watch or compete in the San Diego Triathlon.
