  6. Command to the Midwives Shiphrah and Puah. What was the problem Pharaoh sought to remedy? How would this affect the Hebrews? What would be the likely out come for the Hebrews from Pharaoh’s command to throw the Hebrew boys in the river?

  7. Finding Moses Ex 1:10 “When the child grew, “she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, who adopted him as her son and called him Moses; for she said, “I drew him out of the water.”

  8. The Burning Bush Ex 3:15 “Thus you shall say to the Israelites; The Lord, The God of your Fathers, …Abraham,…Isaac, …Jacob, has sent me to you.” And if they ask me your name? Then tell them I am who am. I AM sent me to you.

  9. Tell the Israelites I am concerned about the way you are being treated in Egypt. So I will lead you out of Egypt to a land flowing with milk and honey. Ex 3: 16,17 Say to Pharaoh: Thus says the Lord; Israel is my son, my first born. Hence, let my son go, that he may serve me. If you refuse, I will kill your son, your first born. Ex 4:22

  10. Death of First Born Tenth and last Plague – Death of All Egyptian first born, both man and beast. Ex 12:29 “At midnight the Lord slew every first-born in the land of Egypt, from the first born of Pharaoh on the throne to the first born of the prisoner in the dungeon, as well as the first-born of the animals.”

  11. Consecration of First-born • Consecrate every first-born that opens the womb among the Israelites, both of man and beast, for it belongs to me. Ex 13:2 • Every first-born son you must redeem. Ex 13:13 • Lk 2: 22-24 “When the days were completed for their purification according to the law of Moses, they took him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord, just as it is written in the law of the Lord, ‘Every male that opens the womb shall be consecrated to the Lord’, and to offer the sacrifice of ‘a pair of turtle doves or two young pigeons’….”

  12. Moses’ Prayer Before Crossing Red Sea Ex 14: 11 “And they complained to Moses, ‘Were there no burial places in Egypt that you had to bring us out here to die in the desert?”

  13. Destruction of Pharaoh's Army Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and the Lord swept the sea with a strong east wind throughout the night and so turned it into dry land. Then the Lord told Moses stretch out your hand over the sea, that the waters may flow back upon the Egyptians, upon their chariots and their charioteers. Not a single one of then escaped.

  14. Wandering In the Desert At Marah the people grumbled against Moses saying, “What are we to drink?” After the water became fresh, “I the Lord am your healer.” At Desert of Sin – “Would that we had died at the Lord’s hand in the land of Egypt, as we sat by our fleshpots and ate our fill of bread! But you had to lead us into this desert to make the whole community die of famine!”

  15. Miracle of Manna Ex 16: 12 “I have heard the grumbling of the Israelites. Tell them: In the evening twilight you shall eat flesh, and in the morning you shall have your fill of bread, so that you may know that I, the Lord, am your God.” Ex 16: 35 “The Israelites ate this manna for forty years, until they came to settled land; they ate manna until they reached the borders of Canaan.”

  16. Water from the Rock and Battle with Amalek Why did you ever make us leave Egypt? Was it just to have us die here of thirst with our children and our livestock? Ex 17:6 “Strike the rock, and the water will flow from it for the people to drink.” The place was called Massah and Meribah because the Israelites quarreled there and tested the Lord, saying, ‘Is the Lord in our midst or not?’

  17. Arrival at Mount Sinai (Horeb) A Covenant is a solemn agreement made with a religious ritual. Like a contract, it is binding on both parties: God – Israelites. Ex 19:5 If you keep my covenant, you shall be my special possession, dearer to me than all other people, though all the earth is mine. Ex 19:7 Everything the Lord has said we will do. After two days of sanctifying yourselves I will come down on Mt. Sinai before the people.

  18. The Great Theophany On the morning of the third day there were peals of thunder, lightning and a great trumpet blast. Mt. Sinai was wrapped in smoke and the Lord came down on it in fire. The whole mountain trembled violently. Moses spoke and God answered with thunder. All the people feared. Ex 20:18 When the people witnessed the thunder and lightning, the trumpet blast and the mountain smoking, they feared and trembled. 20:19 They said to Moses, “You speak to us, and we will listen; but, let not God speak to us, or we shall die.” MOSES MEDIATOR

  19. Moses Given the Ten Commandments Ex 20:1 “Then God delivered all these commandments.” 20:5 For I the Lord, your God, am a jealous God, inflicting punishment for their fathers’ wickedness on the children of those who hate me, down to the third and fourth generation; but showing mercy down to the thousandth generation, on the children of those who love me and keep my commandments

  20. Chapters 21 – 23 Covenant Code Ratification of the People was made with holocaust sacrifices to God and the blood was sprinkled on the people Ex 24:7,8 “All that the Lord said, we will heed and do. Then he took the blood and sprinkled it on the people, saying, “This is the blood of the covenant which the Lord has made with you….” Q: In these word do you hear an echo from the Mass?

  21. Adoration of Golden Calf After Moses was gone for forty days and forty nights receiving instructions from the Lord on the Ark, Table, Lampstand, Tent, Priestly vestments, altars and anointing oils, guess what happened?

  22. Moses Discovers Worship of Golden Calf The Lord said to Moses: Go down at once to your people, whom you brought out of the land of Egypt, for they have become depraved. I’ll destroy them and make you a great nation. Moses implored the Lord, let not your wrath blaze up against your own people. Why should the Egyptians say, ‘With evil intent he brought them out, that he might kill them in the mountains and exterminate them from the face of the earth.” Ex 32:11

  23. ATONEMENT So Moses went back to the Lord and said, “Ah, this people has indeed committed a grave sin…! If you would only forgive their sin! If you will not, then strike me out of the book that you have written.” The Lord answered, “Him only who has sinned against me will I strike out of my book.” Ex 32:32

  24. Moses and Arron in the Holy of Holies RENEWAL OF THE TABLETS Ex 34:6,7 Thus the Lord passed before him and cried out, “The Lord, the Lord, a merciful and gracious God, slow to anger and rich in kindness and fidelity, continuing his kindness for a thousand generations, and forgiving wickedness and crime and sin; yet not declaring the guilty guiltless, but punishing children and grandchildren to the third and fourth generation for their fathers’ wickedness!”

  25. Israel Encamped Around the Glory God’s Presence in the Dwelling “Then the cloud covered the meeting tent, and the glory of the Lord filled the Dwelling.” Ex 40:34

  26. God’s Glory Over the Meeting Tent at Night Whenever the cloud rose from the Dwelling, the Israelites would set out on their journey. In the daytime the cloud was seen over the Dwelling; whereas at night, fire was seen in the cloud by the whole house of Israel In all the stages of their journey.

  27. In short, the covenant confirmed a special relationship that Israel claimed with God, based on a shared unique and moving experience; with the appointment of Moses as their Mediator. You will be my people; and, I will be your God. Q: Do you see any analogy between Moses and Jesus, the Christ?
